CyberNet LogoWell, we managed to put together a wider version of CyberNet because it was requested by a few people. The content area is a little wider and the most obvious thing is that there are two sidebars. We aren’t going to clutter up the sidebars like a lot of sites do but it makes it easier to see things like the calendar that we just added. Pretty soon we’ll start adding a poll every week to the sidebar so that we can get our community involved and spark some fun discussions! :D

We definitely took into consideration those people who are still using monitors with a resolution of 800 x 600 or lower. Those people will still be able to see all of the content perfectly without scrolling sideways but the last sidebar won’t be visible. In the last two months we have had over 500,000 visitors and only 2% of those visitors were using a resolution lower than 1024 x 768, so we thought we should expand the view a little so that the other 98% of you can enjoy the use of your full browser window.

We would definitely love to hear any feedback you may have regarding the new look so leave us a comment below. Thanks!

  1. Nice job Ryan.

Everything looks good out here

    Isn’t it ctrl

    F5?

    You are correct

  3. yeah, ctrl F5 works.
But i use Shift Reload button, i like to use my mouse.

Is still use 800×600, because monitor or graphics card is so bad, that everything above that is little blurry or something, and it hurts my eyes.
    This design looks good.

  4. My resolution is set to 1680×1050, but you are assuming that I use my browser in full screen mode ;)I’m one of those people who hate to run apps full screen, I don’t know why, it just bugs me. luckily, the site still looks good with the browser only using the right half of my screen. :)

  5. I thought it a bit messy at the top – what about splitting the sidebars? One left and one right…

If the sidebars don’t go all the way down the page then what’s the point of having them squashed up the top. Better off either splitting them or keeping them linear and making the post area wider. Thinking out loud and you asked.

  6. Personally, I like it. Assuming the weekly poll will go to the left of the Syndicate box, it will look very nice. Wider is better.

  7. Why not make the width dynamic, that way its good for all resolutions?

  8. Please don’t split them one left and one right. That would mean I have to scroll right to read the articles.

  9. My resolution is set to 1280×1024 and I refreshed the page with shift and cleared my cache etc.

I’m going to give constructive criticism in that the site having two sidebars on the right side seems kind of strange looking to me. I liked it with one sidebar on each side.

If it were me, I’d merge the sidebars into one that goes farther down the page instead or redesign the sidebars content and increase the width of your blogging post area as well.

I hope my meager opinion helps!

Yep, that is exactly where we were planning on putting the weekly poll. We’re just waiting on Zoho to finish a problem with the Internet Explorer 7 browser.

We definitely love to hear everyone’s opinion. There are some other things that we would like to add to the sidebar in the future which is another reason that we wanted to extend it. I’ve also been pondering creating a “fluid” site where it would adjust to the width of your browser.

  11. great work, now I can see the wonderful release calendar without having to deliberately scroll to it 8)

I agree should be one side bar that goes down the side. Having the second side bar is just too odd looking and makes the page too busy at the top.

  13. i also don’t care for the double column sidebar.

Didn’t that use to be Pontiac’s saying?

Ryan, my first thought also was that the two sidebars side by side looked weird. However, that is a good way to accommodate people that either have a low resolution or do not run apps full screen like myself. However, I do run at 1280 x 1024. Once I get my widescreen monitor, I will run apps sized down width wise.

  15. What if the article is longer than the first sidebar column?

  16. Two sidebars does look odd. I don’t want to echo everyone elses comments about putting them on both sides but it looks crowded, like something went wrong with the CSS floats. Maybe doing some funky stuff with javascript to hide the menus that are less often used (like syndicate, polls, popular articles and the release calender) until the user clicks the title – like I do with the appearance and admin bars on my CMS.
