You can get a free one time Gmail backup at [backupmymail.com] There is also a paid service that updates your backup daily. The result is a zip file of your IMAP folders, each with an .mbox file that you can import into your mail client.

@Steve – That’s pretty insane that PayPal had to call you just to have you stop the forwarding. I couldn’t imagine why the heck that should affect them.

I had my Gmail forwarding everything to Yahoo for a while. I figured that was a great idea since Yahoo now has unlimited storage.

Imagine my surprise when I got a PHONE CALL from PayPal begging me to turn off the forwarding! Apparently this was causing some kind of problem at their end (I’m still not clear on what exactly the problem was — maybe a mail loop?). It must have been a non-trivial problem because PayPal called me repeatedly (both at home and at work) until they tracked me down.

Yeah, it was time consuming porting all my Yahoo! emails to another address, maintaining folder structure. It wasn’t all that bad, though, since I only had a few folders.

thats some great advice. i feel that google is pretty reliable and right now i see no reason to backup my email. on the contrary i actually backup my personal stuff onto gmail.

Wow, this is a very useful tip!

I actually use GMail to backup my Microsoft Outlook (I use POP3) because I like having an online backup.

I suppose it is always a good idea to occasionally backup your backup
