Another great tool to measure items with is the Adobe AIR application called Pixus:

Fades out the area outside the viewport and comes with several skins (none, IE, Safari).

I went to Meazure 2.0 sight and attempted to download via the provided Simtel link. Unfortunately, Simtel attempts to install this software automatically, ignoring the “Save” choice. Luckily, I run as a Limited User and that factor kept Simtel from automatically installing the software. As it turns out, Yahoo search engine has identified Simtel as a site with “Dangerous Downloads.” (The software author needs to choose reputable software download sites.)

Instead of using Simtel, Meazure 2.0 can be downloaded from PC Mag directly:

I use my screen capture utility to measure things on the screen. Works pretty well, and since I’m already running that process I don’t need anything else.

Of course that only lets you measure in two directions, so for more power these utilities look pretty good.
