While it may be near impossible to achieve complete laptop security, there are lots of preventative measures that you can take.  Laptops appear to be a magnet for thieves who just can’t wait to get their hands on one. Here are a few anti-theft protection ideas for your laptop and accessories.

First, get a cable lock! One such solution is the Targus DEFCON CL Notebook Computer Cable Lock.  According to the product page, around 1,000 notebook computers are stolen everyday.  This cable is 6.5 feet in length and can’t be cut! It attaches to the lock slot on your computer and uses a combination lock with 10,000 different possible settings. Certainly a cable lock isn’t fool proof.  Back in July of 2005, PC Magazine wrote about and posted a video showing a Kensington Laptop Lock picked by using a cardboard toilet-paper roll. It’s been well over a year since PC Magazine wrote about this, and I’m curious what kind of progress Kensington has made.

According to one article, 40% of notebook lefts’ occur in the office. Surprised? One solution is by using a docking station that is permanently attached to a surface. While you’re traveling with a notebook, another solution is a mobile alarm system.  TravAlert is one option which is totally passive–  arm it and forget it.  It is motion sensitive, prevents unauthorized access, and has a 105 decibel alarm.  I think that ought to keep people out of your bag!

Always remember that your notebook computer will never be 100% safe anywhere you go whether it be on a plane or at the office.  By always remembering that no place is safe, you should be better prepared for the thieves that may come your way.
