In addition to Office 2004 I use www.NeoOffice.org and I found it decent - lots of improvement in the last year. In fact, now I use NeoOffice more frequently than Office 2004. The spreadsheet works for whatever I do, the word processor works well, the drawing program is quite good, and I have not been bitten too badly with Office format (in)compatibility.

Wear and tear: I drag my Macbook Pro wherever I go and it has held up without a problem. I'm currently on my second one.

Office 2007 is one of the apps that I miss the most. It's a very well designed Office suite, and the Mac alternative is nowhere near its quality of the Windows one. Plus I miss using SnagIt for taking screenshots... Skitch is nice, but not quite as powerful.

It's funny to me that you miss applications from Windows. I moved to the Mac in late '06 and have loved every minute of it. It only took me about 2 weeks to get completely used to the way things worked on the Mac and only about 1-2 months to get familiar with the way that the Library folders worked. I never missed a single application from Windows (except games, but that's a whole different story), I've been able to move to Mac equivalents and have actually found them as good if not better then their Windows counterparts.

Like it... yes. Love it... not quite.

As we pointed out there are still some sore areas particularly in the application arena, but generally it's pretty good.

Anywho, how do they stack up to wear and tear? Are they tough?</blockquote></div>
My brother was just asking me about this the other day. He said, if you had to pick between a PC running Windows and a Mac, which would you choose? My response was that I like both operating systems pretty equally but I prefer the hardware of the Mac. It's an aluminum case and it's durable. It just feels much sturdier compared to my previous Dell.

I don't think as many people are "switching" as you think. When you look at the PC market share compared to the Mac market share, PC's are way ahead of the game, although Apple is gaining some.

Try to find a comparable notebook (not just features but also design, weight & size), a Sony Vaio for instance, and you'll pay a similar price :) It's just that Apple only focuses on the high-end market.
