Yeah, people naturally clicking the “Yes” button is a huge problem. I’m sure you’ve used other people’s computers before who have like 10 toolbars installed…and I’m sure they didn’t go hunt all of those down themselves.

Of course I noticed the dialog that asked if I wanted to run the applet. The point with that comment was that some people.. and I know plenty… will just click yes to get rid of any box that appears. Experienced and/or computer savvy people know better. Others don’t. Those are the people that end up with viruses and have issues with computer security.

To expand on bunnyhero’s comment: if you didn’t notice the dialog that asked you if you wanted to run a signed applet and give it permission to do that, you need to rethink the way you use your computer for security reasons….

Itâ€™s actually kinda scary to think that with one click and only a few seconds later, Secunia was able to get a good list of applications I was using. That means any website could probably do the same thing with one click.

it’s only able to do that because you agreed to run the signed java applet (the permissions alert that appears when you run it). if you were at a site you didn’t trust, you’d hit ‘no’ at that dialog and the applet wouldn’t be able to access that information.

Ryan actually mentioned the same thing last night when I was writing the article. He said it would be nice to have something that automatically did it for you so that you wouldn't even have to think about going to the website.

I like the concept of this tool, but I absolutely hate Java applets. I hope that they will release an offline version soon.
