Many of the concerns brought up here seem to be addressed by the upcoming new version of Firefox, version 3.1. For details see this CyberNet article.

Have you tried the Hide Unvisited add-on?

Agreed with Lappy! Good that this is adjustable. Quite a few people don't like the Awesomebar it seems (though maybe they just have to get used to it first, like you Ryan).

Now the address bar will behave just like it did in Firefox 2 where it only searches those addresses you’ve typed into it.”

“match urls only” (default for 2) is quite different from “match typed urls only” ( what you get from toggling this pref to true, also this pref is in 2 as well, not something new in 3 )

the latter does NOT include the links you clicked, i.e., visited but not from direct input (type or paste) to urlbar

The (only) reason I hate the "awesome bar" is "match urls only" is not available. Getting a load of matching titles and having to scroll to the url entry is a pain.

True, but a lot of people don't want to hassle with switching between multiple profiles.

Yay for our extension! :D

Those two things alone make the AwesomeBar truly awesome!

My solution is to set up a new profile.

Call it something innocuous like "Test Browser", and put an icon for it on the desktop. ("C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -P Test Browser").

Open this version of FF, then;
Tools > Options > Privacy > Settings:
Check off all items, click OK
Check off "Always clear my private data when I exit Firefox", click OK.
