Would be great if Mozilla and Opera joins forces and make Opera Fox :)

thing that are important for me:

- fast cold start and good cache system from Opera. Firefox is so slow :\

- Security from Opera. Firefox has 4 exploits, Opera no one.

- Compatibility from IE :)
Opera has many problems with google services

- Extensions from Firefox to customizating the browser

Mitch/Ryan: Actually firefox let's you do that too. (Since 1.5 I think?)

I was a keen firefox user for a long time but have switched to opera and haven't been looking back much since, even though I occasionally use firefox because of incompabilities. I don't really miss the extensions and would be more than fine without widgets.
The perfect browser for me would be more or less a mix of opera and flock, the things I miss the most are:

-(compability, even though this isn't operas fault.)

-auto-update. The lack of this is the reason I still install firefox for family etc.

-A more advanced and customizable news reader. (flock I'm looking at you...)

-Spell checker (flock, once again)

-Calendar.

-GPG/PGP/SMIME support in M2. (not sure if I would actually use it but it would be a nice touch and it seems like there are quite many who would like to see it.)

-Better ftp support

-Better password manager (at least make it possible to see the passwords in the server manager.)

That's all I could think of right now.

Thanks for pointing that out. I have used Opera on and off for quite some time now and I had never noticed that! Talk about a sweet feature.

Just an addition to your comment "Opera also has a similar search engine manager but Firefox makes it a bit easier to add additional search engines.".

Opera will let you right-click a search field on any page and select "Create search". All the currently selected form values will be used in the custom created search.

Very nice article! I'd like to point out that Opera does indeed have anti-phishing features and has had them since version 8. In fact, it was the first browser to introduce such features a good year before Firefox and IE copied them.

[...] The second one was an article by Ryan from CyberNet, who compiled a list of features that he would like to see in a ‘perfect’ browser. Like the previous article, this too was very positive about the Opera browser. [...]

I find myself using a mixture of Firefox (mostly), Opera, and IE7 (occasionally Netscape as well!).

Anyway, I can understand the argument for Opera, because it currently comes standard with the most stuff. That is why I usually recommend it to non-google users who are not really technical people.

The customizability of Firefox makes it head and shoulders above the competition. I'm hoping they will continue to add some basic extensions into the standard Firefox 2.0 build and beyond (such as the additon of close tabs, etc.), but being able to pick and choose which extensions I want is the key to me. Everyone I know that uses both, has several different extension setups. No two are alike!

Great write up!

I agree with you that the perfect browser would be a combination of Firefox and Opera. I think I covered most of the features that you mentioned except for the slow startup speed.

Also, in most browsers you can stop scripts from running just check the Options and you should see something in there.

The things that are a must for me in a browser.

- Broader Website Compatibility. (Ex. GCalendar cannot be accessed in Opera).

- A feature that is brought up by an extension called 'anti-pagination' in firefox.

- Ability to stop executing scripts in a browser.

- Browser Loading/Operating Speed. Firefox has a very slow cold start speed.

These are the features that I would love to use ina browser.
- Mail client.
- RSS Aggregator.

Bottomline: The ideal browser for me would be a combination of Firefox and Opera.
