A couple of times a year, a big ole telephone book arrives on my doorstep with a thump. These telephone books which were once a necessity are now near obsolete. I haven’t used an actual telephone book in I can’t tell you how long and the reason for that is that it’s so much easier to search for people and businesses online. Whenever I need to look-up a phone number or address, the first thing I do is head to Google or YellowPages.com to search. Out of habit, those are the two sites I normally go to but there are so many other terrific ones out there. Today we’re going to take a look at PhoneNumber.com which is a great alternative to your typical online information site.
PhoneNumber.com is one of those all-in-one types of services. Not only do they offer the phone directory, they also offer a slew of other services which include:
- People Search
- Business Search
- Reverse Phone look-up
- Reverse Address look-up
- Area and Zip Code look-up
–People Search/ Find Neighbors–
The database at PhoneNumber.com contains thousands of records, and I was impressed with the results. Under the People Search, I did a search for my name and surprisingly enough, it pulled up a listing which gave my name, age, and address. One interesting feature that I found under people search was “find neighbors.” I was curious if it would actually pull up my neighbors and it did. Some of the results weren’t exactly updated. For example, it listed one neighbor that I knew had moved away over a year ago, but still, I was impressed.
So when does the “find neighbors” feature come in handy? Well, if you’re not the social type and you still haven’t met your neighbors, you can use this service to at least get their names. If I had to pick one feature that stood out with this service, it’s definitely their People Search and neighbor finder.
Maps and Driving Directions
Each time it pulls up a people listing, it also lists local information for the city in which they live in. This information includes the population, total households in the area, median age, and median household income. They also offer a map and driving directions to an address that you pulled up via the people search. Be sure you’re using this feature in Firefox or Internet Explorer because the map would not load in Opera. They use Microsoft Virtual Earth to provide the mapping features.
The example below shows a search that I did for “George Bush” in the District of Columbia. It pulled up the President’s name and in fact, it listed that his job title was President and his company was the United States. Clicking “Map and Driving Directions” pulled up a map and if I wanted, I could enter in a starting point to get directions to this destination.
–Reverse Address Lookup–
Most of you are probably familiar with reverse phone look-up services out there which help you identify who it was that called you. There are plenty of different choices out there (PhoneNumber.com offers this as well) and it’s a nice service to have available. A similar service that you may not have heard of or used before is also offered by PhoneNumber.com, and it’s Reverse Address look-up. If you have the address for someone and you’d like to know their name, this service will do just that. To test it out, I entered my address to see what it did, and it pulled up my name. Once again though, the information can be out-dated so it’s not best to rely on this information as 100% correct.
–Wrapping it up–
If you’re like me and the actual phone book that arrives at your doorstep ends up collecting dust and you’re wanting an online service to use, give PhoneNumber.com a try. Like I mentioned, their People Search and “Find Neighbor” feature is especially helpful, as is their reverse phone and address look-up.
