For those of you using CyberSearch I thought I’d let you know that I just released version 2.0.2 that resolves almost all of the issues users were reporting with Firefox 3.6 Beta 1. The main reason I wanted to let everyone know is that Mozilla hasn’t approved CyberSearch 2.0 yet, which means you won’t receive an update notification in the browser. If you want to update to the latest version you’ll need to head on over to the CyberSearch homepage and install it from there.

I’ve also rolled up several bug fixes in this release, and one simple feature that I meant to include with the original release but never got around to fully implementing it. It’s so simple that I wouldn’t be surprised if you used it without even realizing it. What is it? Pressing the Escape key when you have a result selected should repopulate the address bar with your search phrase. This should be natural for most people… you use the keyboard to highlight a few results, decide they aren’t want you want, and press the Escape key to “cancel” the selection.

I’m trying to make this as user-friendly as possible, and since the release I’ve received over 300 emails that include feature requests, bugs (mostly reports from Firefox 3.6 Beta users… thanks everyone!), and a lot of “thank you” messages. A majority of the feature requests I’ve gotten are great ideas, but won’t be implemented because they stray from my original vision. For example, I’ve received numerous requests to offer the same search functionality in the search box instead of the address bar. The whole goal of CyberSearch is giving you the tools you need to drop the search box all together. So don’t be offended if I don’t agree with your ideas… right now I feel as though I’m teetering on the edge of having something so complicated that no one will want to use it. For that reason I’m very selective with what gets added, and also because CyberSearch currently has over 100,000 users (123,000 at its peak) that I have to take into consideration.

I think I’ve been able to personally respond to every email, but if I haven’t by now feel free to shoot me another one.

  1. Brilliant. Thanks for the bug fix I mentioned in the previous Cybersearch post.

    Edit: I spoke prematurely. After a few browser restarts, the same thing is happening as before. I type a few letters and they disappear every time.

  2. Great product, Ryan. I am loving it. Nine times out of 10 I know that my desired search result will be on the first page of Google results, so why should I ever have to go to that page?! This extension saves ma a page view for every search I do. I now consider this an indispensable Firefox add-on.

  3. Bug: if you are typing in the address bar with “wrong” speed then the results list will be empty and you have to type another character to make it appear. Happens when you try to search your bookmarks, so no keyword is entered. Only perform searches when using a keyword is enabled.

    Since 2.0 it is very inconvenient to use the domain search. I used it this way:
    1. Pressed Ctrl+Backspace till only the domain remained in the address bar
    2. pressed Space
    3. entered the search text

    Now you have to press Home, enter a period and press End before you can enter the search text.

    To make it convenient again: either let enter the search text before the address (search text [somesite]) or accept domain search keyword after the address ([somesite] . search text).

    Anyway, the add-on still rocks. :)

    • I just posted 2.0.3 that should resolve the “typing speed” issue. [cybernetnews.com]

      As far as the domain search goes, there’s a good explanation as to why I require a keyword. If I don’t it can actually affect the normal behavior of Firefox which is not acceptable to me. For example, a URL that contains a space in a filename or directory will automatically be recognized as a domain search. If the user tries to visit that URL it will instead take them to their designated search engine since CyberSearch thinks they were doing a domain search, but in reality there was just a space in the URL. There’s really no getting around it without using a keyword. Trust me, I tried. :)

    • I just noticed 2.0.4. Thank you, Ryan! :)

  4. Problem: Using FF 3.7a1pre, when entering a keyword, the history list drops down and the keyword is deleted which make me type it again

    Ex: I want to type “cybersearch” but after typing “cy” the keyword was deleted and the address bar becomes empty

  5. Cybersearch 2.02 seems to be broken in firefox 3.5.5 It stopped working after I updated firefox to this version

  6. The update from 1.x to 2.x broke the searching capabalities. Is there a link for previous version.

  7. I have the same problem. FF 3.5.5 after updating to 2.0.2 cybersearch stop working (Windows 7 x64).

    I can’t save new Keywords.

    OK button has “no action”.

    Under Tools I don’t have “CyberSearch Options”

    • I found a solution!

      Those who have the same problem follow these steps:
      1. Close Firefox
      2. go to your Firefox profile folder e.g.
      c:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxyyy.default

      3. find file prefs.js and open it with Notepad.

      4. Find and delete those 2 lines
      user_pref(”extensions.cybersearch.keywords”, “cybernet|CS|digg|… your old keywords”);

      and

      user_pref(”extensions.cybersearch.maxRows”, 0);

      Now works fine for me, but there is still a problem if you write a little bit faster in address bar, already mentioned above.

    • This basically means that something went terribly terribly wrong during the import (we use a new keyword structure for better efficiency). Karlos’ solution will work, but I’d love it if you could send me the value of his fourth step in an email to tech@cybernetnews.com before you reset it.

  8. Hi there, I just wonder why we dont have Google Luky search for the result I surely know it is. For instant, I would like to look up a word from dictionary.com
    wait to see it soon
