Over in our forum Max noticed that it was possible to get a free version of WinRAR compliments of PC Welt (the German edition of PC World Magazine). It’s been nearly two years since a free version of WinRAR was being handed out, and it’s coming back around once again. This time, however, you don’t get the absolutely latest version of the app. WinRAR 3.71 is the last release, but what you’ll get is WinRAR 3.62.
Unfortunately the site where you would request your free license is now being screened to verify that your IP address is not coming from the United States (and possibly other countries). It’s not too late though as some members over at SlickDeals have already posted the same key file that you would be sent anyway.
Here’s how you can get your complimentary version of WinRAR 3.62:
- Download the WinRAR 3.62 key
- Download version 3.62 of the application, and install it
- Copy the key file from Step 1 into the folder you installed the application in from Step 2 (probably “C:\Program Files\WinRAR\”), and rename it regkey.key
Personally I prefer to use the free and open source 7-Zip application, but if you would rather use WinRAR it doesn’t get any cheaper than this.
Note: This is for United States residents only
Microsoft’s antivirus solution called Windows Live OneCare isn’t exactly my number one choice for security protection, but it’s definitely better than having nothing. Thanks to Amazon you can get Windows Live OneCare 2.0 completely free after a $30 mail-in rebate. Unlike some rebates this one doesn’t require proof that you are currently using a competing product that you have purchased, such as Norton or McAfee. And if you use the “Super Saver Shipping” there will also be no shipping costs.
Windows Live OneCare will work on either Windows XP or Windows Vista, and can actually be installed on up to three different machines. This subscription will last for one year.
