If there was ever one new product that Apple would need to take their time with to make sure they did it right, it would be a tablet computer. There have been rumors upon rumors that Apple was working on such a thing, but nothing really came of it. Now the rumors are starting to flow again, and this time they have a little more meat to them.
According to MacDailyNews, they say their source (who happens to be the same source that tipped them correctly about wireless iTunes Store sales coming to the iPod and iPhone) tells them that Apple is working on a MacBook Touch. Here’s what they said:
Think MacBook screen, possibly a bit smaller, in glass with iPhone-like, but fuller-featured Multi-Touch. Gesture library. Full Mac OS X. This is why they bought P.A. Semi. Possibly with Immersion’s haptic tech. Slot-loading SuperDrive. Accelerometer. GPS. Pretty expensive to produce initially, but sold at “low” price that will reduce margins. Apple wants to move these babies. And move they will. This is some sick shit. App Store-compatible, able to run Mac apps, too. By October at the latest.
It’s very possible that Apple has been working on a tablet computer for quite some time, trying to perfect it. They certainly had the time to do it. Luckily for Apple, they’ve seen how Tablet PC’s really haven’t taken off which bought them some time to come up with something amazing. If Tablet PC’s had taken off, Apple would have been under more pressure to come up with their own version a little sooner.
Another indication that Apple is at least working on something unique comes from their CFO, Peter Oppenheimer who was discussing Apple’s quarter 3 financial results on a conference call yesterday and said, “We are working to develop new products that contain technologies that our competition will not be able to match. I cannot discuss these new products, but we are very confident in our product pipeline.”
