Microsoft is stepping up to compete with VMWare by allowing users to download their Virtual Server 2005 for FREE! You may not think that is a big deal since you have to pay for a Windows OS to run on it, but then you haven’t heard the good news about the latest release. This version of Virtual Server 2005 will allow its users to run Linux Distros on it. This software did cost $99 without any Linux support before, so making it free is definitely a smooth move by Microsoft.
This does, however, require you to have a Windows machine for the host computer (no surprise there). So I don’t think Microsoft feels they are hurting themselves by this free release.
