There is a MySpace chat but you opt-in to it unlike Facebook.

And yes, of course there could still be competition under "openness" - just have different chat apps all using the one protocol, but the apps themselves could be different, ie. one from MS, Yahoo, Google, Pidgin, etc. Problem solved!
