I’ve been trying the latest Opera 9.5 alpha and it uses much less RAM than Firefox, Opera 9.24 and Maxthon 2. It was listed as one of the main features of the new Opera, but I wasn’t expecting such a drmatic drop in RAM usage. (Btw, Opera 9.50 will be released next Thursday according to the Opera Desktop website)

I'm using Opera 9.5, but my browser usage typically isn't standard by any means. I visit hundreds of sites everyday because of the nature of our job, obviously. Opera 9.5 is better in terms of memory compared to 9.24, but Firefox 3 actually looks like it is better than Opera now. I'm working on a more detailed comparison of memory usage and such for an article, so keep your eyes peeled over the next few weeks.

Opera 9.5 BETA is being released on Thursday, not the final version. ;)

Ouch! I haven't tried it on a Mac so I can't really say how it is.

xpgeek wrote:
Wonder how much extra ram usage this is going to add? Anything else they can think of to just bloat it up? Firefox 3 starting to look like the Firefox that finally makes me use something else.

I started using the nightly builds of Firefox 3 as my primary browser for the last two weeks, and the performance is surprisingly good. I think they've squashed some big memory leaks, and on my heavy days my RAM usage maxes out around 150MB, and Opera is about 190MB. Before I would see Firefox 2 clime upwards of 1GB. So they are actually making strides in the right direction.
