This is just one album, but the group The Crimea after being dropped by one of the large record companies decided to give away there album for free on the web site, its rumoured that they are now making more money than when they were signed. Can only assume through concerts and merchandising.

I am surprised that music.download.com was not mentioned (or at least I didn’t see it.) I have found many good free (legal) downloads there. Of course, there is also a lot of crap. Happy hunting.
