This rumor by no means has been confirmed, but we’re telling you about it so that you can keep your eye out for it. If it’s true, it’s an awesome deal. Rumor has it that starting on November 24th at 8 AM and running through November 25th at 11:59 PM, Wal-Mart is having another “secret” sale. They’ll be selling the 80GB PS3 system for $499 (its usual price) but buyers will be able to choose 10 Blu-Ray titles under $30 for free. Add those 10 to the 5 you already get by mail through Sony’s program, and you’ll have 15 Blu-ray movies worth over $400.
The user who reported this deal at Blu-ray.com says he works at a Wal-Mart in the electronics department which leads me to believe he does actually know what he’s talking about . He said stores were just notified on Saturday and that a link for it won’t be available until about Wednesday. According to what he knows, Wal-Mart is stocking up big for this! He says “For those stores that carry BD already, additional titles are being sent in for the sale. For those that do not have BD in their store (a small minority), product will be sent to each store specifically for this sale.“
Here we thought Wal-Mart was supporting the HD DVD camp after they sold that Toshiba player for under 100 bucks! Turns out they’re not taking sides, and they’re supporting both pretty equally. Anybody considering buying a Playstation 3 to get 15 free movies if this rumor turns out to be true?

Wow, that seems to fit into the “to good to be true” category.
I still don’t think that I could purchase a PS3, but that is an amazing deal for people that like that kind of stuff. I’m Nintendo 4 Life!
If I was into buying Blu-ray movies I would surely jump on this deal, but I hardly buy any movies as it is. It’s kind of funny because I jump to a new gaming platform every generation. I owned a Sega, then PS1, then Xbox (original), and now a Wii. Guess I’m still not stuck on one or another.
It does sound like it’s too good to be true, but it wouldn’t surprise me in the least!
Usually the big Xmas sales start Friday morn. Can you confirm the 24th(Sat)?
If I had an HDTV I would jump on this deal if it turns out to be true and if Wal-Mart in Canada could create similar deals. Why does our Thanksgiving has to be in October
That’s what the rumor is, but I don’t think there has been any confirmation.
It’s on their website–under secret sales….
I was interested, but I first decided to take a quick ride to my WalMart on Route 1, North Brunswick, NJ and talked to 3 employees including a manager. Employee 1 had no idea what I was even talking about and could give me no details. I asked questions such as if they will receive more Blu-Ray movies in as part of this promotion, so we can pick worthwhile titles (As someone buying it primarily for the blu-ray player, but looking forward to game functionality as well), I am not willing to shell out $499 for mediocre movies I have no interest in adding to my collection.
Employee 1 referred me to employee 2, a manager. He said call early in the morning and they will hold a PS3 for me,for 1 hour max. I asked him about the movies, and he had no idea. The lady at the register was from another department and REALLY had no idea.
I saw a guy scanning movie returns, so I asked him, and he was most helpful in telling me that they don’t know what the “home office” wants them to do for secret sales, until about 11 the night before when the “orders” come down. He said then signs are put up, and they are all clued in with clear instructions. He had no idea about if there would be more movies, or not.
At this point I am leaning towards picking up a 40 GB PS3, for less, and using the rest to buy some Blu-Ray movies I do want at Amazon, in their buy 2, get 1 free, Deepdiscount.com sale with 20% off, and perhaps some others priced reasonably well via Amazon or Deep Discount. I really don’t want to stand outside for hours only to find out they have the same 20 movies they have today.
How frustrating….you’d think they’d pack the store chock full of nuts, with PS3’s and movies to rip HD DVD a new one and make it exciting and not annoying for customers (and this from someone who already has a HD player, via the WalMart $99 in store secret sale a few weeks ago).
Done with rant
I didn’t think that the movies would be all that great because they are, after all, offering a large quantity of free movies available with the purchase. It would be nice if they let you choose 10 of the “less popular” videos or 5 of the “more popular” videos, or something along those lines.
