If the ads were removed the space would just be left blank since there is other stuff in that column, so it doesn't help us gain more space. I always try to add the attachments right away as well, because Gmail does indeed start uploading it immediately so that sending the message doesn't take so long. I actually didn't realize that Yahoo started doing it too, but it is a really nice feature and I'm glad to see everyone's picking up on it. What really surprised me is there's no script for ad removal. Noone minds the text ads? I found a real good script 4 Y! mail beta that blocks the ads so they only attempt to load once -at initial startup (then they dissapear), and gives you the full screen space.
