actually it is only in the global ranking that live.com beats google. because google for other countries are listed as separate web sites (like google.fr) however live.com serves all countries from a single web site

to do a real comparison you need to add all google sites vs live.com

It's just that Yahoo ! use something.yahoo.com and yahoo.co.jp.

Google went the other way and diluted their presence - google.co.uk, orkut.com, google.fr, google.co.br, google.cl, google.es, google.de, google.pl, google.com.mx, google.com.in, google.com.ar, google.com.pe, google.com.ve, google.ca, google.com.vn, google.com.cn, google.sk, google.com.co, google.it, google.com.th, google.co.jp, googlesyndication.com, google.com.tr, google.com.eg, google.co.hu ... and that's just those in Alexa's top 100 domains ! Aggregate those and you will find Yahoo! has some way to go.

Yahoo is very popular in Asia where they were the first ones to offer decent webmail services. that accounts for its popularity.

Google wrote:
Youtube is owned by Google so don’t they count as 1?
What is included with Yahoo?

Alexa basis the websites according to domain name. So in Yahoo's case anything that has the domain yahoo.com will count in their stats, such as mail.yahoo.com which accounts for 46% of their traffic.

Whoa, Y! at #1! It still kinda puzzles me how Y! can be so popular, the clear leader in mail users, and have just so many services, yet it's practically being declared as dead a HD DVD.
