If you are a WordPress developer or just want to play around with your own local installation there is a free package called Instant WordPress that will get your own site up and running in under a minute. It’s basically a self-contained portable Windows installation of WordPress, Apache, PHP, and MySQL. By downloading this you won’t have to worry about getting any of those requirements installed before running WordPress on your system.
There are a lot of reasons something like this can be useful. With it being packaged up in a portable format you’ll be able to take it with you wherever you go. So if you want to work on a personal project over your lunch break at work you’ll be able to pick up exactly where you left off at home. You can also just throw it in your Dropbox so that any changes you make are instantly available on all of your machines. It uses less than 250MB of space so even if you’re only equipped with a free Dropbox account you should be able to swing that.
If you do decide to use this you need to understand that this isn’t designed to host a public-facing website. The good news is that with how WordPress is designed you should be able to copy up the “wp-content” folder to an existing or new install and have it start working.
