Let up all remember that every software company’s anti-piracy measures have been cracked and every software company has issues with insecure code. Microsoft is alone here. Adobe, Apple, Oracle…the list can go on and on.

For Microsoft, it doesn’t matter, is Vista poorly secured from being cracked or not. Because Vista WILL BE cracked anyway, no matter, how long/hard it will take to crack it.

It is a little bit of a grey area because I will probably be given a license to Vista through my university's MSDN Academic Alliance but I am not supposed to use that license after I graduate from school. I'm sure there is a similar thing with purchasing the software from a university as well.

Photoshop CS2 and Dreamweaver 8 are my two big ones that I use on a daily basis but there are several other smaller ones like SnagIt, TimeLeft, and Windows Live Writer to name a few. Most programs have a comparable Linux solution but they often don't have the extensive feature set that I have found these programs to have.

I have used “copies” of Windows as my OS for years, however, I will be buying Vista and actually be legal with my OS for the first time in many years. I will be buying the Ultimate edition.

Now I do have a sister that works at a University and has access to get software really really cheap, including Windows. They have the XP Pro full version for only $49.00 and I only assume that they will have Vista as well, although i am sure that it will be more expensive.

My dilemma is, will it be a grey area of legality as it is intended for academic faculty use only? They are only allowed to buy a single copy and I would be the one using it instead of here.

Otherwise, I will just fork out the cash for the full ultimate version. I agree with Ryan’s comment above that it is not every year that a new Windows OS is released and they (MS) have done a fine job with it. Besides, it is one piece of software that runs 24/7.

Well you can always count on Microsoft to spend tons and tons of money on useless anti-piracy measures so that they can jack up the price for the rest of us, not to mention putting us through a bunch of extra hassle with all their genuine advantage crap.

The current crack is more of a temporary fix from what I have seen. It will treat the final release as an “evaluation copy” similar to the pre-release versions. It will end up expiring May 31, 2006 but I’m sure a full fledged crack will be out by that point.

I have been pondering a switch to Linux myself but I just don’t think that is possible. There are too many Windows-only applications that I use everyday and they just don’t work with Linux, even with Wine.

While I do have a hard time forking out the money for Windows it doesn’t happen that often and I think the Microsoft team actually deserves it because of the hard work they have put forth. I didn’t think I would be able to say that but Vista’s stability and appearance is quite nice.

i’m not sure yet if i’ll use a pirated copy. i might just switch to 100% linux if vista is too much of a pain in the ass.

one thing is for sure – there is no way in hell i’ll ever BUY vista. i cannot stand the thought of putting another dollar in the pocket of some dirty ms exec.
