There are a lot of Apple fans out there these days, and I have nothing against them. I don’t use any Apple products aside from the iPod, but I do think it is good that they are emerging successful in the computer market so that there is more competition. And good competition often means that the consumers win.
For those of you who put Apple up on a pedestal there is an article by PC World that you should read. Mike Elgan, the author of the article, lists off reasons he believes Apple is turning into Microsoft…despite being an Apple supporter himself.
I’m not going to quote his entire article because it is quite lengthy, but I thought I would pull out the interesting facts that he made regarding different areas of Apple.
–Apple as a Monopolist–
Microsoft was criticized for bundling Internet Explorer with Windows, yet Apple can bundle iTunes with the iPods and iPhone? Heck, you can’t even make a call on the iPhone without activating it through iTunes first. Not only that but Mac OS X, the iPhone, and the new iPod Touch all come pre-installed with Safari.
–Apple as a Copycat–
Microsoft has always been criticized for copying ideas from other companies, but Apple might not be as innocent as you think:
- For more than a decade multitouch interfaces, similar to the iPhone’s, have been demonstrated.
- Apple’s new iPod Touch now has built-in WiFi, yet both Microsoft’s Zune and SanDisk’s Sansa Connect MP3 players have had that feature for quite some time.
Of course Apple’s implementation of the features are much better than anything we’ve seen prior, but the fact of the matter is that many Apple fanboys shower praise on ideas that Apple didn’t even pioneer.
–Apple as a Bully–
Yes, Apple does its fair share of pushing people around. Recently NBC wanted to charge more for their television shows being offered on iTunes, and when Apple declined NBC announced that they were pulling out. The author of the article says that NBC will come crawling back to Apple after they realize that the only way to succeed in digital downloads is to have your content on iTunes.
I would also like to add one of my own thoughts to this as well. Microsoft has always made Windows an operating system that works on millions of different hardware configurations…even on the new Intel Mac’s. Apple, however, is very possessive over their operating system and require that you purchase one of their high-priced pieces of hardware if you want to run it. So while Windows may cost more to buy than Mac OS X, I don’t think that you can pickup a new Macbook for $500 like you can do for a Windows computer.
It probably sounds like I’m anti-Apple, but that’s not the case at all. As I previously said I love that Apple is providing some stiff competition for Microsoft because in the end the consumer will always benefit.I just thought that the PC World article was a real eye-opener by showing that the two companies may not be as different as you think.

Apple/Microsoft/Google
You just wait that name will be there soon!
Windows is an ” accident ” waiting to happen. The computer gets slowed
down by virus updates + updates by microsoft. The same year you bought your computer…you will be paying again, and again, and………..
This means REPAIR BILLS and Dollar BILLS for Bill !
The AFTERMARKET in REPAIRS is big business.
You’re just jealous that Macs are more trendy than other computers.
So what do you call someone who uses both Apple and Microsoft?
confused
Apple, so far, is nice. M$ has always been evil.
Apple has far superior hardware and software, in my opinion, but is way overpriced. Sometimes, it doesn’t matter who is ‘better’ – it matters what’s good value. i.e. the price for an Apple mouse in Australian dollars? $99.00
I don’t care who’s better or that I love MacOS a million times more than Windows, I won’t ever pay $99 for a mouse, and other overpriced hardware.
Not to forget that Apple places wrong announcements about being first in something: I know that at least Opera was prior to bring the full web on a phone and also on music/video players
(I don’t repeat the details about Apples announcements as this just would strengthen the myths)
apple sucks….their ipods and computers may be sleek, but they force you to use their own hardware/software as in the case of itunes…
i personally believe microsoft is good…they may have their share of unfair practices, but i would definitely choose windows to mac anyday or a creative zen vision m to an ipod…
Makes sense but people don’t see that way just yet, but in time maybe.
Trendy maybe, but that’s the least of my concern.
Yeah, their hardware is overpriced, but to be fair PC’s also have their own overpriced hardware. Of course it is mostly targeted at gamers.
That’s what I think…Microsoft is good, but they too have their own faults. Sometimes it is like trying to pick a cellphone carrier where you know that they all have their downfalls, and it prevents you from being decisive on which one to choose.
I thought by now people will have started to “see the light”, but I think Apple’s marketshare needs to get bigger before companies start to take them on as a viable Windows competitor (especially in the business arena).
I prefer Apple over MS (mostly because there are OPTIONS to Apple) but what people need to realize is that these are businesses. They are out to make money.
Apple is a copycat as well. Creative invented the iPod interface, which Apple stole for use in the iPod. Creative sued and Apple paid them $10 million, however Creative continues to lose money because of the iPod. Creative makes great line of MP3 players called the ZEN, which are better the iPod, but get no recogition.
Creative will continue to have these problems though just like how the Zune will never really take off. Companies are making their accessories and applications to ensure compatibility with iPods, but none others. It’s just like some mapping software that I use…it lets me export maps to the iPod if I want.
That’s true, and the competition I believe is a good thing.
What is better? A Mercedes or a BMW? A Nissan or a Toyota? It’s relative, I would say. What I see problematic is when people only use one thing and disregard the rest. Variety is the salt of life. I like Microsoft. I like Apple. Simply because I have used both and can appreciate when something is good or even superb.
I too have used both and when you have, you’re right that you can realy appreciate when something is good. We’ve said over and over again that both Microsoft and Apple have great things about them, but they also have their flaws.
Windows is probably friendlier than apple. I mean they say you get a free iPod but you end up paying £5 in phone calls. In a way they are an evil money grabbing company. But be honest with you apple computers look nicer and are sleeker than most of the Windows computers. Not to mention I find them way easier to use than the Microsoft ones they have at school. Also they are less likely to get a virus than Windows ones are. Overall I think apple computers are better. I think Windows own too much for their own good.
i think microsoft are beter.Billy g came up with the computer idea then apple copied .Microsoft os computers are cheaper than those Apple computers. You get far more choice on PC (microsoft)than apple.VISTA IS MORE BETTER THAN OSX OR WHATEVER.
OVERALL OUTCOME:MICROSOFT ARE BETTER
The typical Windoze user speaks! Need I say more?
as a warez downloader, I say I win!
I can download OS X, WinXP, WinVista even the not released Windows 7, lol!
Ok now Apple’s Mac vs PC for Windows
I go for PC if it wasn’t for all the warez appz, mp3z, gamez and videoz that can be played on any player like MediaCoder, winamp, windows media player with all the codecs. hehe!
the only thing I like Apple is the iMAC coz it’s handy(if I can just put all the PC parts at the back of the iMac screen, lol!)
About the iTunes… hmmmp, that’s y I prefer my Nokia N95 than an iPhone or iPod, bleh~, coz I don’t need to convert it in itunes. also, Mp4/mp3 players now are bit same as iPod, d only thing is that it’s easy to import music rather than converting…
So who win?
d WareZ Site admin coz dey get traffic and d warez downloaders…lol
in times like these…Recession…only thing that can save u for ur appz, games, moviez, mp3s needs are warez sites…lol!
How can you judge apple products when you only use and ipod? thats ridiculous. and maybe apple wasnt the first to come out with touch screens and portable internet (like ipod touches) but its all about the advertising that apple did. Apple took the smart approach and went for the youth, and now microsoft is the copy cats by now trying to advertise to the youth (By putting 4 yr olds on comercials? come on thats a little young) there is a reason why people put apple on a pedestal and its because they did all the right advertising and overall their products are better.
Apple sucks…I’ve used them a lot and grown to hate them. They only use one software while 100s of computers use microsoft. They also have to come out with something new every week while microsoft is just there to help. Over all I find microsoft more user friendly. Microsofts are also more personable.More businesses use Microsoft too. The only businesses that use apple are artsy ones. GO MICROSOFT
Microsoft sucks arse. Every Mac can run Vista and other MS operating systems, so if you need to run a barbaric OS on a Mac, you have that option. Apple’s OS X is light years ahead of Vista in every measurable way.
Microsoft is always best. WHy does apple always target microsoft on their ads. They must know that microsoft is better and the only thing they can do is make fun of M$.
That is because Microsoft is begging to be made fun of! For example, would you like to hear a one-word joke? — “Zune”
Thank you very much. I’ll be here all week.
I don’t understand all the fuzz about who is better. Let the market decide. Both are good companies with fine products. I don’t think either company is worst or better; they just have different perspectives on computer and their applications. My verdict: they’re tied, no winners.
I love how you wrote this not using Apple products. Brilliantly stupid on your part. I would take you more seriously if you used both.
Hey,
Apple as a copycat:
For more than a decade multitouch interfaces, similar to the iPhone’s, have been *demonstrated*. -> only Apple could make it perfect
“So while Windows may cost more to buy than Mac OS X, I don’t think that you can pickup a new Macbook for $500 like you can do for a Windows computer.” -> I wanna see your windows computer do everything a Mac can do…
it all comes down to your personal preference, i, prefer apple, and if you have the money, why not? MS is good for differrent things than apple is.
I agree Omar… no winners here. I see both actually targeting different markets at this point, and so there isn’t really a way to do a fair comparison. Especially since Apple makes both the hardware and software for their computers.
“I wanna see your windows computer do everything a Mac can do…”
I wanna see a Mac that can right click.
I just find Macs too awkward to use. My HP does everything faster and generally in a less frustrating way than Macs can.
I can show you! Just press control + click. Inefficient but you get used to it. Now you show me a windows that can’t get a virus (besides the one that is permanently turned off or never connects to the internet). And my mac can do things faster than your PC in a less amount of time. Heck, my mac can run your operating faster on its system. How is that for frustrating? Not being mean, but you really to get your facts right.
i think its worth pointing out here that microsoft is considered more difficult to use as a os than the mac… they say if someone had never used either, he/she would take a few months longer to get round a ms based os…
my point here is a lot of mac users look down on pc users whereas – maybe – this should be the other way round.
i use the os x and xp and both are well written and intuitive, i’m not anti either, but in all honesty, something i have found again and again is pc users are far more open minded to using both, a majority of mac users are very anti ms and will try to convince the world they’re right… don’t know why, i’m also a big fan of linux and think if you want to talk the best that takes some beating, but i don’t walk around looking down on all the mac and pc users and trying to convince the world i’m right…
finally, something that irritates me is apple constantly bitching about ms in their commericals, i saw one recently and they claimed the os x cant get viruses…. this is untrue and im surprised ms didnt hit back
Windows is the best! So much more compatible! Apple is TOO EXCLUSIVE! I cant convert anything! And itunes is a waste. why raise the price to 1.29????? not a smart move at all!
Are you unaware that ALL of Apple’s current models can natively run ALL current Windows versions? Well, they can, and typically faster than dedicated PC machines. Now what?
As somebody that grew up using apple computers from grade school through high school I have seen the large range of apples abilities. I recently purchased a MacBook pro 13″ and so far I am loving it. I haven’t had a single issue with it yet. I really love that I do not have to worry about having to have a ton of anti virus software slowing down my machine. It was also ready to use out of the box. The thing about Microsoft computers is that when you buy the laptop for $600.00 you still have to buy wireless cards Anita virus software and by the time your done you surpass the price of a mac. For my own computer I chose the apple route because of the user friendly/video/audio capabilities. Microsoft is more used than apple because it’s cheaper. You get what you pay foe in the computer world. I was personally sick of windows crashing Internet explored releasing the flood gates for viruses and always having to always enter control+alt+delete. The overall performance and reliability of my mac is better than any pc I’ve used. And to the guy that said bill gates invented it all, learn your history. Wikipedia is a good site. Bill gates made his money off of windows. And one more thing about windows is that from windows 95-XP hasn’t changed much. I hear windows 7 is suppose to be good but i will have to see It to believe it. Microsoft is gonna have to try really hard to win my business back. But in conclusion I think different applications require different computers. That’s why houses are designed with apple and Microsoft the majority of businesses. I like my mac and personally could care less if anybody doesn’t. I got what was right for me. If Microsoft is your thing then kudos.
Hi,
I work for IBM.
See people, doesn’t matter what you use as long as you are using it individually and not doing something special, for example on an average people perform general tasks like, internet surfing, using business applications, and might be some software as well, one can perform these tasks on (Windows, Linux, Solaris and on Mac) as well, but when we talk about advancement or development so Mac is useless, maximum industry use (Windows and Linux / Solaris) platform, even in today’s market only industry use Microsoft or Sun platform.
Mac is nowhere in an industry, and as its not in industry so its nowhere in market, as its nowhere in market so we have the answer which one is better ?
Mac is nowhere boss !!!
If Mac is secure so why network industry use Linux as a server why they spent lot of money, why they provide higher packages to RHCE and RHCP, reason Mac is nowhere in networks, another good reason Mac use its own machine, however Linux and Windows are machine independent, another fair reason how many applications are available for Mac well one can count on fingers, now lets talk about Microsoft SORRY BOSS we can’t count on fingers, Mac looks good and is good inside home within a box.
actually, mac is in industry. alot of grafic designers, photographers, special effects, etc. use mac because of its high speeds, and graphic resolution. nobody i know uses IBM, sorry. and windows is a piece of crap.
I agree with Anonymous. Nobody uses windows to do graphic editing, it takes too long and freezes up too fast. And get this: A friend that works in a bank recently told me that they are switching the security to a mac operated system. Not sure exactly how or what they did but he told me that they are making it mandatory for emergency guard (which is what he is) to learn how to disable false alarms and run security checks all on a mac. Why? Because they are faster. Another reason? Criminals can not hack them or upload a virus on the computer which is, I am assuming, how most criminals get inside a computer in the first place. So sorry mate, your facts are wrong.
Microsoft rocks and apples sucks THAT’S IT. APPLES ARE SO OVERRATED AND PEICES OF CRAP.
thank you come again
apples suck
i agree with you all the way
I would highly suggest proofreading your work. It will make you sound more educated. Thank you. Good Day!!
microsoft is better than apple,or maybe not…
I have used Windows and I have used PC (Operating system analysis only). Here is my verdict, as a teenager:
PRO’s:
I was so frustrated, I asked my mother to buy me a Macbook. Two years and still going just like new, which leads me to my next point.
- NO VIRUSES! I had to write this in all caps because viruses was such a major deal for me. Every 6 months my PC would crash because of some or other virus/malware/etc problem. I don’t know what it was but I know I spent tons of money trying to fix it. Even when I took it to Geek Squad (Best Buy), it still had problems emerging every week.I went through 4 laptops in three years and crashed them all. Had I saved my 3-4 grands on buying and repairs, I would’ve had three macs by now. All the crashing was because, I love to download things. I still do. I download pretty much anything that looks cool: songs, movies, pirated movies, etc. And end result:Blue Screen of Death.
- Durability: I have spilled soup on my Macbook and accidentally left it outside in the cold (in my car) and had dew on it the next morning. I may just be lucky, but my Mac still works like new. And my mac has never crashed, never froze, never slowed, never gotten stuck for more than a couple of minutes (when opening large files). I am a pleased customer. Whereas, with a PC, I remember accidentally dropping my computer and immediately there were horizontal lines on the display. Ruined the display entirely. I know this is not a very accurate durability comparision since its two different scenarios, but still, just to point out the incidents.
- Inteface: I absolutely love how easy it is to use a mac. And even now, new features keep popping up that I previously didn’t know about! I am absolutely in love with using two fingers to scroll and spotlight. I love how accurate spotlight is. I can type anything I vaguely know about a file I am looking for, 99% of the time spotlight lists it up. Love it! It even lists the webpages that start with my search query that I visited in the past! I didn’t even read the manual before I started using a mac. It’s so easy! The fonts, the graphics, the HD screen, everything is super cool, durable, and made to last. I also love the “sticky note” feature. And one absolute biggest + in my opinion is how fast the computer is! I play many games and they never “freeze” or taking forever loading. That was my BIGGEST problem when playing games online with a PC. It would take forever to load games, if I installed tons of games with large memory. For some reason, I’ve installed more games on my mac than a mac and it has less memory, yet it is never slow to open my games. I am pretty impatient when it comes to waiting for something to load (which is why I have cable internet lol), but yeah, I love not having to wait for my games to load on a Mac.
Cons:
Left Click: It was a big issue when I first purchased a mac. It still kinda is and definitely takes point away from a MAC. PC, you win on this one and one more.
Games: I pointed out earlier I love games. However, I am not huge on paying for most of them. I own plenty of paid games, but some games, I like to try out full length for free without having to pay, and just watching ads in between the game which generates revenue. I know yahoo does that (don’t know if still does?), but I was sooo disappointed that there aren’t any sites that do that for a mac game.
Very very very big – on mac’s side… I know its an issue with the computer itself, but it comes with using it.
Heating Issues: As known by all, apple products tend to heat up fast. I am worried sometimes when my computer’s fan remains turned on for more than 10 minutes, so I shut the screen down and let it cool. Maybe its just paranoia for me, since it hasn’t ever shown signs of damage but just stating that it does tend to make me nervous. And this is when I work with it on a table so all the vents are exposed.
Compatibility: Even though there are products that are compatible with Macs now more than ever, Windows is still preferred choice. I rarely had problems with that so its not an issue for me but may be for some especially for people, who use it for business purposes which requires certain software.
Price and Components: I’ve only had this problem recently. I just think things on Apple’s are overpriced. From buying accessory products for Macs to purchasing recently introduced iLife (which is free on new computers
is a huge turn off. On the plus side OS X Leopard upgrade only cost $30, not bad. But there should be a further incentive to loyal customers. I am disappointed that I can’t use Face Recognition tech on my iphoto without paying $79 to get iLife which comes with features I won’t ever use. Not cool. I should be able to just install a newer version of iPhoto and get the new features for free. Never had that problem with Windows! Also, Quicktime sucks. It doesn’t let you do half the things Windows player did even after paying for it, which is ridiculous! because I never had to pay to use a player in Windows. Major – points.
Verdict: Macs win. Although I miss my free games, and my left click button, the joy of not worrying about viruses and malwares and the money I save on buying several different anti-virus software is just too huge of a + point. It overshadows and completely engulfs the point that macs lack left click and couple of other cool things. I have redeemed the $1,500 I spent on my mac in just two years
and my macbook is still going strong just like the first day I bought it. No windows computer can even touch that! Even a barely used Windows computer doesn’t run as smoothly as my two year old overused macbook does.
Honest opinion.
“I wanna see your windows computer do everything a Mac can do…”
I wanna see a Mac that can right click.
I just find Macs too awkward to use. My HP does everything faster and generally in a less frustrating way than Macs can.
I will show you!
