iTunes new releases.pngPurchasing movies from iTunes continues to get better and more convenient for buyers. If you’ve bought movies from them before, you know that it usually takes at least 30 days from the time a movie comes out on DVD until the time it’s available to buy on iTunes. Yesterday the big news was that Warner Brothers was saying that they were going to be making their movies available online sooner. In fact, sooner meant the day the movie was released on DVD, it would be available online. As it turns out, Warner Brothers is not the only movie studio to be involved with this.

A Press Release from Apple this morning confirms that Warner Brothers movies will be available the day they come out on DVD, but there’s a whole long list of studios involved! Take a look at all of the studios:

  • 20th Century Fox
  • The Walt Disney Studios
  • Warner Brothers
  • Paramount Pictures
  • Universal Studios Home Entertainment
  • Sony Pictures Entertainment
  • Lionsgate
  • Image Entertainment
  • First Look Studios

Nice, huh? Most movies you’ll want are done by one of the studios listed above which means you’ll have no problem getting your movies the day they’re released on DVD. Two movies were released on DVD this week that you’ll already be able to buy from iTunes, and they are “American Gangster” and “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.”

The only question we have which the press release didn’t answer is if these movies will be available for rent immediately as well, because they only mentioned purchasing new releases at a price of $14.99. If they ever expand this day-and-date with the DVD release to rentals, rental stores like Blockbuster and Hollywood Video could experience quite a drop in sales. So will this give iTunes more customers willing to try out buying movies in a downloadable version instead of a physical DVD because of the availability?

When you go to the iTunes store, look for the new release movies at the top of the page…

Thanks for the tip Omar!

I remember reading that it was supposed to be coming later this year after they get a DRM system in place that the movie studios approve of.
