I've never actually played with AbiWord, but I have heard a lot of great stuff about it. I might have to give that a shot because I'm curious as to what it offers compared to OpenOffice Writer.

It sounds weird, but I am still hoping Microsoft will offer Office for free someday and just sell extras like templates, font packages, and other add-ins. Not that I can't afford it, but then Microsoft wouldn't have to worry about people looking to switch. As you hinted at, the thing I love at Word 2007 is that it's essentially a desktop publishing program now, which is what I've wanted, like forever!</blockquote></div>
I have thought about what it would take for Microsoft to offer Office for free, and there would need to be a significant benefit in it for them. My thought is that they should offer advertising within the application, or maybe a short ad (5 seconds or so) everytime a program starts up. I think that could attract a lot of new users.
