For a start with the size of drives these days a defragment could take a whole hour to complete, which isn't what you want hogging your processor on boot. Secondly I've never actually seen a performance benefit from a defragment. Maybe on a slow machine with not enough memory (anything less than 1GB) it would be a problem, but not on a decent specced PC. I may try a standard XP defrag at some point and see if I notice a difference, but I shan't hold my breath.
