Most games will allow you to set graphical settings that your machine can't handle - they just make it easy to bring them down again. Vista should implement something like that, so you can at least try it and see what your card manages.

One other thing that I hate that they don't let you customize is the Aero Glass. Back in build 5274 you could change a registry key so that Vista didn't check for compatibility with the graphics card. At that time my laptop worked just fine with Aero but now they don't make it easy to force Aero compatibility.

It's a shame that, with what is meant to be such a customisable OS, they decide to restrict you when it comes to such a stupid option as the start-up sound. You never know, maybe they'll see sense before we have to go messing in the registry.

I took the plunge and am running Vists (5728). I like it, there are some neat features.

However, my favorite game, Titan Quest runs a little jerky. It appears to be something to do with the DVD drive as I will hear a click from time to time and then the game runs smooth for a bit, then this repeats.

There is an issue with Media Player 11 that will not show the video of any of my avi files. It will play sound, but no video, just shows the visualization. It said it was obtaining the codec, but apparently not.

Also, no Java Runtime and I am not sure what version if any are compatible with Vista. Anyone know?

OldManDeath wrote:
Thanks for the information Ryan. I also bookmarked the Vista Team Blog for future reference.

I will be taking the plunge and installing Vista this coming week. Hell, I could get a hair up my butt and do it tonight.

I may want to get in some Titan Quest first though. ;)

I wiped one of my Vista systems clean and installed build 5728 but I don't feel like doing it for my other Vista RC1 machine. I haven't noticed any differences yet but I'm definitely liking Vista.

I went looking for the WAV file but I couldn't find it. I think they somehow hard coded it into Windows so that it can't be tampered with. Or maybe I'm just blind?

[...] My readers, I am of the know that but many of you are users of Microsoft Windows! I know not why you would be a user of Windows when there is but the most respectable and usable Kubuntu Linux free for all us to be users of. But that is an issue that is another matter. My readers, for you I have some most excellent findings that I got from this most interesting article. It is supposedly the case that Microsoft will be allowers of Windows Vista users to disable the startup soundings. It was but only weeks ago that I was a discusser of the thinkings that were going on to not let users control such a most integral aspect of their systems! [...]
