I used to turn off the sound scheme as well, but I think Microsoft did a good job of making Vista less annoying. For the most part I leave all of the sounds enabled.

It was cool at first, but it seemed to use a decent amount of processing power to add the effect. Wasn't really worth it to me.

Users pay up big time for the "Ultimate" version of Windows and all Microsoft deliver is a sound scheme?

I'm actually quite interested in the new sound schemes so I'm hoping there's some way I can get them without having Ultimate...

The first thing I do with any Windows install is turn OFF the sound scheme entirely.

Especially in todays cube work environment, extraneous sounds have to go. The worst is the 'begin navigation' click - WHY is it necessary for this to have a default sound?

I have Ultimate but never use DreamScene either - I have never understood why people get excited about desktop wallpaper. Most of the time its buried under your windows - who cares whats going on there?
