Firefox 2 Beta 2 Mozilla has placed the files for Firefox 2 Beta 2 on their FTP. The release notes page is currently up but the download links that they have do not work. Here are the direct links for the downloads of the English versions:

I’m working on putting the portable version together right now and it should be up in a few minutes. Check back soon and if you decide to install it make sure you enjoy the new theme.

Also, you won’t find the new tab changes that I mentioned last night. Those are only in the most recent nightly build that they have released.

Excellent. I have been using Beta 2 RC1 as my primary browser for a few weeks now, and am going to fully un-install Firefox 1.5 now that Beta 2 has hit an official release. I’ve not had a single error or incompatibility with this build so far, and it’s nice to see Firefox going from strength to strength.

So in your opinion, you believe this to be a good stable version?

So far so good. Do like I don’t lose all my current open tabs when I use the ‘restart’ option after adding an extension or theme. Also like the drop down listing all the open tabs, prefer that over the ‘tab overflow’ arrows.

  4. From the date in the about page, it appears that this is the same as the RC1? But then…there was also an RC2. Is that date just not updated after the first RC?

I noticed the same thing with the build date…I took a look at the FTP server to compare. Besides being dated August 31st, the Beta2 file (Win32, En-US) is 5.6 MB instead of 5.4 MB as is the Beta1.

  6. I think they created a special RC2 for Macs and so they just carried the RC1 build forward to RC2 and then to the release. But yes, the build date is the same as RC1 which is good…that means there wasn’t any serious problems that had to be fixed before release.

That makes sense, I keep forgetting about the RC’s for the beta’s. I misread the prior comment as the date was the same as for Beta 1.

Yes, it’s stable as an Olympic cyclist on a bike with stabilizers riding on a giant flat mound of tarmac with magical magnetic repulsion things to stop him falling over.

  9. If only you knew how many times I had to read that in order to picture it. :D

From my uses of FF 2.0a2, 2.0b1 and now 2.0b2, it seems fairly stable. On the other hand Minefield (FF 3.0) kept crashing every time I tried to import my bookmarks. Still using 1.5.0.6 as my primary browser. I’m tempted to make Beta 2 my primary but too lazy to do so right now.

  11. Yeah, Minefield has that whole new bookmarking system so I am sure it will be a little while before the kinks get worked out. Which is why that feature was pulled from FF2.

At least in FF 2.0b2 (which is now my default browser) they added the ‘List all tabs’ feature which was already on Minefield. I like that over those goofy ‘tab overflow’ arrows they introduced with FF 2.0
