It looks like Mozilla Thunderbird has finally made its way to a milestone build: Alpha 1! Here is an overview of a few of the new features you will find in this build:
- Message Tags
- Folder Views including favorite folders
- Improved New Mail Notification Alerts
- New Windows installer based on Nullsoft Scriptable Install System
- Find As You Type in the message pane
- New combined and improved Add-ons manager for extensions and themes
- Updates to the extension system to provide enhanced security and to allow for easier localization of extensions
I actually just started using Thunderbird 1.5.0.4 last week and it is really nice. I haven’t really had a need for it in the past but it seems as though I acquire more and more email addresses. Once I got to the point where I couldn’t remember the logins I knew I had to look for an alternative and Thunderbird was the first thing that popped into my head.
I started using Thunderbird 2.0 Alpha 1 last night and it has been running smoothly. If you want to try out this build the download links are below and Mozilla has been working on the release notes page in case you are looking for some more details.
Download Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0 Alpha 1:
Windows: Installer
Linux: GTK2 + XFT (no installer)
Mac OS X: Compressed Disk Image

I have put together a portable version of this build.

Coincidently I downloaded the portable version of Thunderbird 1.5.0.4 just yesterday because I wanted to try it out and see what it’s about. Do you think you can make a portable version of 2.0a?
I should be able to put it together later tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks so much.
The only thing that its missing is gmail style replys. Like when you reply to an email and it puts the message in on email, an excelent feature.
When are they adding other pim? calendar, tasks, memos.. things that make me want to use t-bird rather than outhouse express..
You might want to give the Spamato plugin a shot, I’ve found that it’s great. Just go to the thunderbird extension page.
Darn, one thing I hate about new release (firefox & thunderbird) is the extensions / add on, I have twenty must have extension on my thunder bird which I depend alot and now all of them are not working… I have to wait till those add ons are updated.. SWEET
This is some awesome stuff here. One thing Id like to see is the ability to minimize to systray. I know theres an extension for that but its buggy.
Joel: I have been using the [minimizetotray.mozdev.org] and I haven’t had any problems with it.

Any idea on how to migrate from 1.5.0.4 to this alpha version? Does a simple copy of the profile folder suffice?
