We do have a desktop server that is capable of running Vista with Aero, but that computer is used solely for backups of important data on multiple PC's as well as some websites (like this one). I would not risk putting a pre-release version of Vista on that PC because of the important tasks that it has to complete.

Also, I'm not sure why it would matter whether we had a PC that ran Vista well or not? All of the applications that I discuss will be both Vista and XP compatible for quite some time, because a lot of our users will not be making the switch over to XP. When purchasing/building computers we like to take the affordable route rather than the extravagant route. After all, we don't play games or anything. I'm sorry if our choice in PC's makes you question the site.

It really makes me question why I even read this site everyday if you don't have a computer that can run vista properly.
No offense, love the site, but seriously.

Yes, I am supposed to be receiving a review PC from Microsoft. It will be a Media Center by Velocity Micro and not a laptop like the others received. The Ferrari laptop that other bloggers have received no doubt supports the Aero, but my weak little laptop with an integrated Intel 915 graphics card falls a little short.

I had received the Media Center but it had been shaken up a little during shipping so something was preventing it from booting up. I sent the unit back and will hopefully receive another soon.

I wouldn't call Vista a waste of system resources, but it does have some major inefficiencies. Most of these are a result of Microsoft's unwillingness to really update the kernel or do away with that great evil, the Registry, because it would break compatibility. Then again, what is better, compatibility or applications and an OS that run better?</blockquote></div>
A Sideshow laptop would rock but they seem like they are going to be exceptionally expensive for the little bit that I would actually use the feature. I guess if the actual Sideshow device was removable from the laptop I would use it a little more, but if it is just built-in I can't see myself pulling out my laptop frequently to use such a small screen that is limited in features. Eventually these devices will probably turn into PDA's though.

Yep, that is me...keeping my hidden files exposed. Microsoft likes to hide many of the folders I need to get into frequently (like Application Data).

I have already tried RC2 and found it worked pretty darned good on my newer machine. With a socket 939, I could upgrade the processor relatively cheap, and maybe ramp up the ram a bit as well. I am just not ready to loose the 10 or 20 programs which make my real hobby a true pleasure to participate in.</blockquote></div>
I remember thinking the same thing back when Windows XP was released. It felt like no one would ever switch because software vendors weren't taking the time to make their applications compatible. Microsoft has done a really great job of making sure the developers get their hands on the new Windows early on so that their software is compatible at launch time. I would speculate that 6-months after the launch of Vista almost all of the software that people use will be updated (provided that there is someone around to update it still).

With Xp fully-loaded, there's not need for Vista right now. I've heard negative things, too re: system resources etc.

P.S. Why are thumbs.db such an annoyance? The space they take up? If they're hidden, you don't see them. Granted some are large files, but disk space is cheap these days.

I am a fan of openSUSE Linux myself, but I have to disagree that Vista is a waste of system resources. I think that Microsoft spent a lot of money making a user interface that is both productive and eye appealing...and the result was Aero. The only downside is finding hardware the works perfectly with it, which is always going to be the problem when new operating systems come out. Heck, I can't even use Ubuntu on my laptop because it isn't able to activate the onboard fan to cool down the processor...resulting in a very hot laptop that is not good for the computer nor my lap. Once Vista starts shipping on PC's then I am sure that a lot of the bugs will have been worked out.
