Collapsed Last Week

Last week we started a poll asking which Google service needs to be updated more frequently.  It looks like the top priority isn’t about getting new features, it’s about bringing current Google services together into one easy-to-use package. Out of 685 votes, overwhelmingly, 69% of voters felt this way.  Next up was Gmail with 9% of the votes. In third place was Google Earth, with 4% of the voters felt needs to be updated more frequently.

Next up is… How often do you reformat your computer? Vote in the sidebar to your left!

usually whenever I feel it has gotten too slow for comfort.

Btw, the two polls on this page were clashing. I couldn’t vote in the post section, had to vote in the sidebar.

Got a “Please choose a poll answer” error.

I needed an option of 1-3 years, but not til I absolutely have too. It takes weeks or even months to get my computer back the way I like it, and I have way too many programs to reinstall. I used to be the first to download and play with beta OS’s but I haven’t laid eyes on vista yet.

Same here. It’s a daunting task to get you machine back to the way you want it. I have to make a list of every application that I want to reinstall and then get links to the application that I no longer have the installer for.

It takes a lot of planning before reformatting.

Wow, I’m shocked! I can usually start to notice my computer slowing down a bit after a few months– and after 6 months.. definitely! I think you’d be surprised at how easy it is to reformat if you get a schedule figured out. You learn to keep your folders nice and organized so that you only need to back up one. You keep a list of the applications you want installed. Probably the most difficult thing is getting all of the application settings just right.

And actually, you haven’t seen Ryan much around today because he’s in the process of reformatting three computers– and it does take some time.

Isn’t it just Format? And you only format the HDD not the whole machine. For example, if you format the chip that holds ure BIOS, you would be stuffed!

I would have to say never.

I do it when uncurable problems arise.

Hey, you have a very nice blog here.
and your poll system is brilliant, I hope it can be applied to my poll blog, can you tell me what poll system you are using? many thanks

I only ever do it when something breaks, which is very rare indeed. I don’t remember the last time I formatted, discounting when I got a little carried away deleting pre-installed stuff from my new laptop and had to reinstall Windows. :P

I hate to reformat my hard drive mainly due to lack of time.

Hmmm…never really thought about that before. The PC was once formatted and had an operating system installed on it, so I am reformatting it (a.k.a. formatting again)? Wouldn’t that be correct?

A lot of people complain about the pre-installed software on PC’s but I am actually glad it is there. Companies like Dell offer the original operating system disk for a small fee (like $10) but the amount of money that you save by having all of the companies pay to have their software pre-loaded has got to be huge. I’m actually thankful for the software that gets preinstalled on consumer PC’s. :)

I have gotten pretty good at keeping things organized and yesterday it took me just a few hours to reformat 3 PC’s and get them setup the way they previously were. I just make sure I have backups of files on other PC’s before formatting the computer…and the backup’s I have scheduled as an automatic nightly process in case the hard drive ever crashes. So it is actually pretty easy for me. I still only do it every few months, but there is nothing like a fresh install.

If by re-format you mean HDDs then never, although I defrag every night.

I probably rebuild my PC every 2-3 months.

 :| 8O :) :? 8) :D  :P  ;) :o  :x :(
