It's interesting to look at the results so far. Right now most of you have either purchased/built a PC in the last year, or you're using one that is 3 to 5 years old. I was actually expecting the 1 to 2 year category to be the most popular.

Like if my PC is 5 years old which choice should I pick? The results would be skewed…</blockquote></div>
I didn't really intend for any overlap. I guess what I was thinking was BETWEEN 1 and 2 years, BETWEEN 2 and 3 years, etc...

Not to be techincal, but your PC is likely not EXACTLY 5 years old... at least it won't be by the time you read this message. Therefore, you should be able to easily figure out which bin you fall into (the 5-7 year bin, if you are at 5 years and 1 minute.)

Until a month ago, my primary PC was 5 years old, although heavily upgraded. I had gone the Dell route back then, and the proprietary stuff in it really hampered my ability to upgrade it how I wanted. I just got a new gaming rig from Digital Storm, and love it.

Mine is 2 weeks old now, I just build mine on March 19th. Blazing fast, prior to that my desktop was 5 years old. :)

Bought my current PC in 2004, upgraded memory & harddisks in the meantime, replaced the monitor because I had to replace the videocard (VGA monitor on DVI looks baaaad) but that's about it. Everything still runs fine, incl. the latest software. Vista doesn't support the software RAID, but then again - I'd rather not run Vista after some experiences elsewhere.

Once the current software doesn't run well anymore on this machine or I need more than 3GB of RAM, I will probably get a new Apple or 64-bit Windows machine. That probably won't be in the next 2 years though :) I'm a bit amazed that it lasts so long - I can remember the days where you had to replace a PC (or upgrade it well) every 2-3 years or it would just be veeeerry slow.

Just recently upgraded mobo/cpu/ram/ps after previous mobo went belly-up. Before upgrading, my main PC components (mobo, cpu, ram) were about 2 yrs old -- except for a newly acquired 1gb RAM that I bought just a few months ago thinking that my system would last at least another year or more (the plans of mice, right)

The last "completely new" PC I bought was the FIRST PC I ever bought (1990). Since then, I've replaced things as I've needed to... Doing it this way thru the 90s and early '00s seemed a sensible way to save money -- but today, the prices on systems are so low you can probably buy a complete system for what I spent to upgrade. The 'new sys' may not be quite as powerful but it will probably be a better value after accounting for HDs/OS and other components.
