A couple of weeks ago we started a poll asking which Office Suite you used. When the results came in, we found that about 59% of the voters, the majority, used Microsoft Office. In the comments, “mrcool10″ wrote that we should have had two options, “MS Office Legit and MS Office Pirated.” We thought this would make a rather interesting new poll even though unfortunately, it does leave out some of you who don’t use Microsoft Office at all. Please vote only if you use Microsoft Office for your personal use.
New Poll: Is Your Copy of Microsoft Office (for personal use) Legitimate?
- Yes, I paid for a genuine copy of Microsoft Office
- No, the version of Microsoft Office I use is pirated
- Mixed, I own multiple copies, some are genuine, others aren’t

Previous Poll Wrap-up:
For our previous poll, we asked whether or not you purchased extended warranties. Overwhelmingly, we found that most of you do not. 64% said no, 29% said sometimes, and only 6% said yes. Responding to the “other” option, one person simply said “Rip off!!!!!” while another said that they favored products that have free extended warranties.

Yes, but I didn’t pay for either one. My friend let me borrow his Office 2003 and I did that survey for Microsoft in the beginning of this year and got Office 2007 Pro for free.
I would assume mine is legit, but then I didn’t pay it as it came pre-installed with my computer. Oh wait I guess I did pay for it as I am sure it was included in the price I paid for the machine.
Straight pirated.
Yes. I got it off the Ultimate Steal promotion, which I first read about on this very blog, so I geuss I owe you a thanks. Never would have bothered if the price wasn’t so good, I would have stuck with OpenOffice.org.
So thanks CyberNet!
I have purchased the following over the years:
Office 97
Office 2000
Office 2003 Professional
Office 2007 Enterprise
For the 03 and 07, I purchased them from my University, so they were $20 each for 100% legit licenses.

I purchased Office 2003 Professional through a Cable & Wireless promotion. It included MS Publisher 2003.
I paid $7.00 per month for 36 months. Payment was made via my telephone monthly bill. That’s the way C&W promotes its Internet service in Panama. They continuously set up attractive computer and software offers bundled with a 3 year Internet service contract.
Gates didn’t make his billions by following any laws that he didn’t have to.
I’ll sleep like a baby tonight knowing that I’m holding myself to the same ethical standard.
The poll results are CC’d: direct to Microsoft Piracy Dept. with IPs
I don’t use MS Office at home any more, I use OpenOffice because it does what I need….
I’ve weaned myself off of MS Office. I’ve been using Open Office for the past 2 years and haven’t gone back. Sure there are a few bugs, but it is improving significantly. And it has direct PDF export from each program.
It does what I need and has a better interface.
Wow, I thought this question was about windows OS’s. I need to read better next time.
Anyways, I don’t own it on any computer. Fuck office. I just use free stuff.
Does using an old beta version of Office 2007 count as legit?
Looks like the pirates are just barely winning right now: 45% to 42%.
Muh ha ha ha!
You’ve figured out my evil plan!
Well, since you’d have to be resetting the timer on it I’m not so sure that’s illegal. But that’s actually dependent on whether it says somewhere in the terms that it’s supposed to expire on a given date.
I don’t use Microsoft Office. So I am going with choice #4.
Pirated since office95 era
Pirate what !?! …. argh!
I got mine from a ninja.
I pretty much don’t do word processing any more but I used OO all though college. I used PSPad for coding, and I have a legit (afaik) version of Outlook that came with a PDA that I use for PIM. I build my own computers so I’ve never gotten it bundled with a PC, and my college didn’t offer MS Office at a student discount rate, otherwise I would probably have bought it if it was $20 like Carl here.
i feel so old-fashioned. i still receive all ms products via mule.
Mine is legit, but I did not pay for it. Microsoft gave me my Office 2007 copy.
