When Opera announced the other day that they were coming out with a Web browser for the Nintendo Wii I was pretty skeptical about how functional it could be. After all, I have used Web browsers on other devices other than a computer and it can be frustrating when you don’t have a mouse and keyboard. I don’t know why I ever doubted that Opera would make the browser truly amazing, but I was surely left in awe after watching the video below.
Now I don’t own a Nintendo Wii so I can’t vouch for how good it is first hand, but it looks pretty amazing. Entering text in using the on-screen keyboard is no where near as tedious as I thought it was going to be. In fact, I think the guy entered text in faster than most of the people I know who “hunt and peck” for keys on the keyboard.
I applaud the Opera development staff for their fine work at making a useful browser for a video game system. I can’t believe I was able to use the words “useful browser” and “video game system” in the same sentence. Before you know it something as simple as a flashlight will be connected to the Internet.

Wow! That was awesome!
Kudos to Opera!
i tested it out on my wii this morning and it definitely rocks! finally, i can watch youtube videos on my tv!
I downloaded mine last night around 12:02 (yeah I was late by 2 minutes), and I had a good couple of hours of using it before I went to bed (I had to come into work this morning) and it works very well. Typing on it not as nearly hard, and the way it sizes the web page according to my TV size is simply wonderful. Opera has done a very good job with it, and I will be surfing with web on my TV.
Very cool.
That sounds so cool…I’m jealous.
And then you make it sound even cooler. I almost want to buy a Wii just for this.
i actually found that accurate typing was harder than i had expected. perhaps i was expecting too much
but i have to backspace a lot. or maybe my aim just sucks.
and i wish the browser would remember my zoom setting between pages, since i am always zooming in. perhaps the final version will allow for this.
has the final price been announced for when it officially launches (non-beta)? will it still be free?
As far as the typing issue goes they could surely release a simple little wireless keyboard to make this even easier, or maybe allow you to use your DS to act as a keyboard?
I dont have a Wii but HEY its opera yipeee r should i say wiiiheee
I so want a Wii as well as that browser. Just two things in my way: no Wii and no wireless internet
I heard the final release will cost 500 Wii pts = $5 ? If I end up getting it I’ll just use the last test version rather than paying (unless they somehow disable it).
This “trial” of the Wii is supposed to always remain fully functional. They have said that it doesn’t have all of the features that the end result will have but it is not time-limited in any way.
That guy is an expert at typing; there is no way I could every do it that fast.
It looks really cool; all I need to do is hook up my Wii to the ‘net and I’m away.
You should get a Wii.
