PS3 with DivX Playstation 3 users are getting all riled up because DivX support has officially been announced for the system. This will be sent out via a separate system software update sometime in future, which means existing PS3 owners will get a piece of the action.

So what does this actually mean? DivX says that game developers will be able to utilize DivX’s decoder technology, but that’s nothing too do backflips over. The big news is that PS3 owners will be able to watch almost all of the videos that are currently shared over the BitTorrent network. The excitement is perfectly understandable considering all of the television shows and movies being shared in this format, which users will be able to throw on their system and watch. This will be thrown onto the decently long list of the already supported media formats for the PS3:

  • Video formats: MPEG-1, MPEG-2, H.264/MEPG-4 AVC, and MPEG-4 SP
  • Audio formats: ATRAC (.oma .msa .aa3), MP3, AAC (.3gp .mp4), and WAV
  • Image formats: JPEG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, and PNG

There has also been rumors that DivX support is coming to the Xbox 360, but both Microsoft and DivX have yet to confirm it. Microsoft better get on top of this because it could effect the decision of buyers this holiday season!

  1. You know both Sony and Microsoft are making it very hard for me to choose! And me being a starving student can’t buy both.

I know a couple people that have picked up the Xbox 360 in the last few weeks because of Halo 3, but none of them seem to want to spend the money on a PS3. Personally I picked up a Wii, but if I was to pick one of the others I would hold out to see if the Xbox 360 is going to support DivX. If it does that would really be awesome, and that would be my choice. If not I think the PS3 has the edge of the Xbox.

  3. If the 360 does not get DivX support than the ps3 could be a very desirable system for a tech-junky, since the ps3 would have the suprior media capabilitys by a long shot.

Yes i know the 360 has media center, i played around with it for awhile and was not happy with the limited options. Constantly converting AVI files is not fun.

Speaking of the Wii, I really think Super Mario Galaxy is a just such a great game :)

A lot of people have been saying that, and I’m thinking about picking it up. ;)

  5. DivX support would be nice. I tried the NLDA or whatever it’s called, where you stream video from your PC, and it doens’t work too well. So native support for more codecs would be cool.
