I heard people talking about that, but I haven't really experienced it too much. You could try setting it to fetch email at a specified interval as a "backup", and see if it's still able to use IMAP IDLE with that enabled.

I had the same need and managed to get a workaround by setting up a rule on my outlook to send high priority messages to my phone via text. Some providers will let you do this, the catch is your mail server has to allow you to setup rules to make this work

Regarding Thunderbird timing out, I found the following info that might suggest the problem:

I followed the instructions to set up Thunderbird for Gmail, but I am running into the problem where Thunderbird stopped getting new emails after a while. It would work for a few hours after initial startup or after I force check emails, but then next day I won't get any Prowl notifications. Same IMAP IDLE settings, Growl for Windows and Thunderbird are both running, just no new emails in Thunderbird. Have you seen this before?

This would be nice if it supported some kind of filter, e.g. for high priority messages only or for messages from certain senders. This would enable those who receive multiple hundreds or more messages per day to use it without being barraged by notifications.

Whoops, looks like my link broke. Anyway, the image is on the bottom of Prowl's homepage.

Have I got good news for you then, I just found out this is already possible! :D Use the option on the bottom of https://prowl.weks.net/static/home/plugin_options.png to have Prowl not send any messages before a certain period of idle time.

I know why I don't want that app... it only works with one Gmail account. I need something that is capable of handling multiple accounts because Gmail also manages our CyberNet mail.

Yeah, I don't know what's up with them. I'll have to troubleshoot that this weekend.
