If you’ve ever purchased a domain name you know what a hassle it can be to find one that’s available. So many of them are not available that it often takes dozens of searches to get one that you actually want. Domize is an excellent free service that might just take the pain and frustration out of searching for the domains though.
Here are the things it can do for you:
- The interface is all dazzled up with AJAX so that availability results are shown as you type.
- It will automatically check for .COM, .NET, and .ORG top-level domains.
- If a particular address is available it will be highlighted in blue, otherwise it will be highlighted in red.
- Hovering over a domain that is already taken it will show you a thumbnail of what the site looks like (as seen in screenshot above).
I’ve used a lot of domain services for checking availabilities, and I’ve never seen anything quite like Domize. It’s speed is incomparable to any other service, and this has definitely earned a spot in my bookmarks. If you use iGoogle as your personalized homepage then there is also a slick gadget that you can add.

Personally I prefer BustAName, which has the same ajax slickness, but makes a lot more sense.
[bustaname.com]
There is also [instantdomainsearch.com] which shows rates from multiple domain services.
InstantDomainSearch seems a bit limited compared to the others mentioned (and “suggestions” takes you directly to GoDaddy.. eh?!), but BustAName is quite nice! Really fast, shows rates for more domain services than InstantDomainSearch and comes up with okayish suggestions depending on the words you give. I like that.
If you don’t need fancy features like that and just want to check an exact domain search, domize seems a better choice though. I got the impression that it’s faster and it looks slicker and simpler. Put the two domains in my bookmarks, great suggestions
Yeah I don’t think this app is very good.
The worst part about it is that when you type something in, it loads the availability of all the meaningless typing leading up to what you typed first, which make no sense or is even useful.
I was actually using that up until I found Domize. Bust A Name does way more than I need it to, and I like the simplicity of Domize.
That’s kind of interesting, but it’s almost as if the rates never change. GoDaddy appears to always be the lowest.
I don’t think that’s necessarily bad. It definitely doesn’t affect the loading speed (at least not for me), and may end up giving you more ideas to choose from.
That’s a great find Ryan. Domize is definitely fast and simple which is what I like as much as possible. However I will keep BustAName around for just in case, sometimes more options can be a good thing.
