Running Windows XP In Ubuntu

One of the hardest things about switching from Windows to Linux is not having the ability to run all of your Windows software. Sure there is Wine which will give you the capabilities to run some of your software, but it probably won’t run all of it. That is why you will want to download QEMU.

QEMU will allow you to run Windows XP inside Linux just like VMWare does. The difference is that QEMU is open source and free! Another great feature is that your Windows XP information is stored in one central file so if you have to format your computer or wanted to take your Windows XP somewhere else it is as simple as backing up the one file.

For those people running Ubuntu you can use the guide below to walk you through how to setup QEMU to run Windows XP. QEMU is a great solution for me and I hope it will help you, too!

  1. I’m interested – you’re testing Vista, glad to have a program to run XP in Ubuntu and eagerly report on the latest Suse builds. How many machines do you have, or do you just have a massive drive with a load of partitions?

And what stuff do you do on which machines/operating systems?

  2. I have a desktop computer that is running Windows XP Media Center on one hard drive and Windows Vista Beta 2 on another hard drive.

Then I also have a laptop with a hard drive partitioned so that I can run Windows XP Media Center, Windows Vista Beta 2, Ubuntu 6.06, and Suse 10.1!

I primarily use Linux when I am at school because a lot of my Computer Engineering classes require the use of Linux. When I am at home I primarily use Windows XP (I don’t want to become too cozy with Vista quite yet, maybe when the RC1 build is released I will start using it every day).

I am a software nut and I love to test out all the latest Operating Systems. I do have to say that I think Linux is gaining some good ground, but Vista has a lot of nice eye candy.
