As a consumer, would you rather have a camera in a phone or a phone in a camera? What we mean by that is, these days it seems phone manufacturers throw a camera in as a second thought and it’s there, but not really quality. What if camera manufacturers were to take their quality cameras and include a phone with them? That’s what Sony Ericsson is trying to do with the C905 Cyber-shot.
The Sony Ericsson C905 Cyber-shot has an amazing 8.1 megapixel camera which includes a phone. They made sure not to skimp on features for either the phone portion or the camera. With this phone, you’ll have features like:
- A whopping 9 hours of talk time
- 380 hours of standby
- Includes a-GPS with Google Maps
- A2DP stereo Bluetooth
- TV-out
- Wi-Fi with DLNA support
The camera portion of the device features:
- Face detection
- Image stabilization
- Smart contrast
- Includes a 2.4″ glass display for viewing your photos
- Comes with a 2GB Memory Stick Micro
There’s been no mention yet of what The C905 will cost when it’s released sometime in the 4th quarter this year, but we do know that it will come in three colors including black, silver, and gold.
Sony Ericsson is proud of their product and posted a press release describing the phone saying,
The C905 is Sony Ericsson’s first Cyber-shot slider and its most advanced camera phone yet. With an 8.1 megapixel camera and real camera flash amongst its cutting-edge capabilities, it offers easy photo-taking in a phone that derives its looks from a digital camera and offers the picture quality to match.
The one thing the iPhone and many other phones out there lack is a high resolution camera. Sony Ericcson could have done a really great thing for themselves by developing a great camera that includes a phone as well.
It’s an interesting approach. If it takes off will depend on the performance of the phone and the camera by themselves. The other 60 thousand dollar question is: How much will it cost?
Apple’s iPhone has a very decent camera and a top-notch cell phone. Tough to beat considering these two factors plus the recent low price.
Looks like an awesome device! I hope it is, or eventually becomes, somewhat inexpensive.
I’m waiting for the phones based on Google’s Android to come out. I have the iPhone, and while I like it, I also hate it. Apple is way too damn controlling and they got it all wrong with the 3G iPhone that is on it’s way. I will not be upgrading. I actually may end up downgrading.
Out of curiosity, what in particular do you think Apple did wrong with the iPhone 3G?
Sony has been taking this dual approach with their W and C series phones. While the W series is heavy on music and akin to a dedicated media player, the C series is heavy on imaging. What they really need is to develop a premium product. maybe a WC series that would include both to compete with other phones out there. However a 8 megapixel camera on a cell phone is great news.
While 8MP sounds great, it might actually be worse. The more pixels you cram on a chip, the more noise and the worse the quality of the pictures. This unless the chip is actually better and/or bigger, which I doubt with a camera phone. I’d like to see the quality of the pictures before deciding if this is an improvement or not. It might actually give worse pictures than a 4MP camera for instance.
I never really thought about it like that, and I agree that it would be nice to see some real-world photos taken with this. It will be interesting to see what the reviews are like once the camera starts to roll out.
Well, for one, the camera still sucks. They could have at least fixed it. It does not handle any type of lighting very well, except for extremely bright lighting. It takes way too long for the camera to take the picture once you click the “button”. Any movement of the camera, even ever so slightly makes the picture blur.
The GPS does not talk to you to give turn directions. There is a speaker on the phone, so why did they not use it?
There is just not enough improvement in the new 3G iPhone to warrant paying the price for a new phone. Besides, Apple is still too damn controlling and they will never change. Therefore, I am patiently waiting for phones using the Google Android platform to come out, most likely next year.
