I'm using the Windows 7 public beta (Build 7000) on both my HP TX1220 tablet PC (-x86 edition) and on my custom desktop rig (-x64 edition) and I'm enjoying it greatly. I've noticed a big difference in Windows' ability to recognize my poor handwritting and how my laptop runs much quieter and cooler than it did under Vista, running all the same programs.

I've had less time to play with it on my desktop as I have on my laptop, but I'm sure my exprience will be just as good. I think Microsoft got it right this time.

Gosh: windows "snap" to the edges of the screen? Multiple wallpaper images?? And SMALL icons in the Taskbar??? Wow!! Just the OS I've been waiting for! I was such a fool to stick with Windows XP. Now I have seen the light.

It's pretty good for what stage of development it's in at M3 milestone it's pretty darn ready for actual Beta Testing by the public. I am experiencing an issue with streaming live audio though I can monitor the task manger and watch Audiodg.exe just churn through CPU cycles so this is the most bothersome issue among several others but it will just require some code tweaking. I watch the process run just stable as hell in Vista. But I think it's also dependent on amount of bandwidth transmitted. Heck what do I really know, you can also see it running as a generic service svc.host process. So there's something funky in the code.

The final RTM should be pretty decent, they refined a lot it looks like. The only time it runs through memory is when that process is running. Yeah Ryan it's looking pretty good I also noticed that Microsoft pushed an update to try and disable the "hack" to enable the Super Bar. I logged in after updates and there are "Updates being pushed" for the Pre-Beta, and my task-bar had reverted to standard.

So I don't know what's really going on with Microsoft if your going to let us play with it, let us at all the features not just some.

I'm really glad to hear that with your first-hand experience things are looking pretty good so far. I can't wait to see what the final release is like.

Well folks I'll add my twenty-cents worth, and share a few secrets. I got "a hold of a build of Windows 7 build 6801" but as is the special features had been locked out by Microsoft. The features are there but it required the actions of another to provide the work around and allow access to them. (It's in the above article)

I started running it in a Virtual Machine (Virtual Box) but the limitations imposed by running it Virtual on my machine just wasn't worth loading so I decide to partition and setup a Dual Boot on my drive and after loading and adding the necessary hardware driver updates along with the "Fix" for accessing the Super-bar all I can say is for a pre-beta it's pretty darn nice they addressed quite a few issues at least in the Ultimate Windows 7 edition.

It pretty much shakes out as advertised and then some. Another feature that doesn't seem to get much press right now is the fact that they added a Compatibility Wizard which will change the permissions for a given program for you. The preview panes are spectacular versus the previews in Vista as is the grouping of windows but it is not without issues. But if it's this great as a pre Beta it will be "the bomb"(really Great) on delivery.

If you do get you hands on Windows 7 build 6801, you can activate your copy if you participated in the Vista Beta Program by using that same KEY that activated the Vista Beta otherwise you'll only get 30 days to play with it. Now a public beta has been hinted at for mid to late December but that's just hints, it may not arrive till next year sometime.

Looking forward to Windows 7, so far, it looks absolutely terrific.</blockquote></div>
No problem. We had been collecting all of the Windows 7 news, and thought that we had more than enough to do an article dedicated only to what we found. We also wanted to get everyone up-to-speed as to what Windows 7 will bring, because not everyone goes hunting around for some of the details like this.

It certainly looks good on paper, but will it be just as good in the real world? As the saying goes, <i>“The proof is in the pudding.”</i></blockquote></div>
I actually think that it will be very good since they have finally rethought the Taskbar. That has become one thing I think has needed to be revamped for a few years now, and I was disappointed that Vista didn't have any changes in that regard. I think the new layout will definitely help boost productivity, especially with the peek functionality.

That's definitely a good point. And yes, it is only in those three versions of Vista. Why they didn't at least put it in Home Premium is beyond me.
