CyberNet Release Calendar I have kept myself busy for the past day or so working on a nice release calendar system to display in the sidebar. I wasn’t quite sure how I wanted to do it but after a little research I was able to put together what I think is a nice solution.

The screenshot that is posted here was taken from the sidebar below the Sponsors box. The calendar lists upcoming software and hardware releases in chronological order, which means the most recent will be the first on the list.

Behind the scenes is some JavaScript code that retrieves a public Google Calendar that I made. It doesn’t have a lot of release dates at this point because I was trying to lay the foundation, but over the next few days I hope to get a lot more filled in. Since it is using Google Calendar feel free to subscribe to it using whatever calendar program you would like. Just pick one of the two formats that are available in the sidebar.

At this time you’ll also notice that all of the listings have asterisks around them. Those will appear around any event that was just added within the last 2 days…making it easy for you to pinpoint the release dates that are newly posted. Each title is also hyperlinked and some will be to articles that we write while others will be to the product’s homepage.

We hope everyone enjoys the new calendar and we will probably be putting together some JavaScript code so that anyone can easily put this calendar on their website. Oh yeah, if any release dates pop into your head why don’t you let me know in the comments and I’ll get them added to the calendar! ;)

Update:
There was a small compatibility issue with Firefox 1.5.* so if you are using that browser please hold down the Shift key and click the Refresh button. That will force your browser to download the new JavaScript code.
  1. I use this to keep up-to-date:
    [filehippo.com]

  2. That is definitely a nice site and I use that too, but our release calendar is for the future and not the past. So it is a little different.

  3. Hi,
not only I love you blog, but now you add this cool calendar.
Thanks a lot for the effort and keep up with the good stuff!

  4. Hi Ryan,

I think it’s a great feature! It seems to be stuck for me though, saying “Requesting data…”

Now, this shouldn’t have anything to do with me being behind a proxy?

    Thanks!
    Gleb

  5. Hmm…It shouldn’t matter if you are behind a proxy. What browser are you using and does it happen in a different browser?

  6. Thanks Ryan!

I’m having the same problem. And as far as I know, I’m not behind a proxy. I’m using Firefox 1.5.0.7.

  8. That was exactly what I needed to know! I got the error fixed and the problem was with the XML parsing algorithm. Firefox 2 has some big changes in JavaScript and I forgot about that…which is why it was working for me and not for anyone else using anything before Firefox 2.

To see the change you’ll need to either delete your cache OR hold down the Shift key and press refresh. Doing that will force the browser to re-download all of the website files including all of the JavaScript.

    Thanks Max!

  9. Very good idea, and it looks good. I visit [betamarker.com] but that only shows me what has been release.

  10. Works now. Thanks for fixing it Ryan.

  11. Ryan, this sidebar calendar for your site rocks, keep up the good work!

  12. I’m glad everyone is enjoying the calendar!
