It's great hardware (but with a price to match). Software-wise, it is good for reading and game playing; I think it's a much better ebook reader than Kindle. But Apple hasn't figured out how to make it easy to use, they have simply stripped all the functionality out that might make it complicated. All you can really do is start up applications, applications that don't otherwise interact. Every app has its own incompatible and ad hoc way of connecting to Picasa, Facebook, getting files, sending files, managing files, etc.The iPad is all style and graphic design, a crappy operating system, and great third party apps. Actually, the whole thing reminds me of a really pretty version of MS-DOS in its limitations. If I could replace Apple's crappy software on my iPad with Android, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I have an iPad. According to his logic regarding the kindle he shouldn't be selling MACs. Last checked Macs barely account for 10% of computer sales. That is a pretty small market ( 10% of computer users ) compared to 40% of US population. It is funny how history repeats itself. So Mac controls the hardware and OS platform and the incumbent creates an OS that runs on a variety of hardware platforms. Sound familiar ? Arrogance again was supreme the last time. Here is the reality Apple creates a good product. That it. It does what it supposed to do. And to their credit they do it well. But where they fail ( repeatedly ) is cooperation. They only ingrate when they get all the benefit

Steve Jobs was always an arrogant, self righteous , self important person. Especially with the idea of everyone wanting a huge ipod touch. Eventually the shock and awe most people experience from apple will die off and we will be left with the same situation that happened with apple earlier.

Yeah I agree with drastik in his observation of the time that has passed since this article was first written. Personally I see Apple products selling to non long time Apple fans on wow features alone. This eventually wears off. I own an iPod touch (that I got second hand for a huge discount) and I only use it for an iPod and web browser. I think the mobile Safari browser is the best mobile browser available, but outside of that I would never even have this device. Further more I don't like iPods because you have to important your music to iTunes, but on other players you can simply drag and drop such as the SanDisk players. I only carry the thing because I'm going to carry any mp3 player anyway, and this device has a brilliant browser. I'm also sickened by this new iTablet business. Anyone who pays $500 for an overgrown iPod touch is simply off their rocker. Apple marketing has brainwashed the public into believing that their products are fast and stable, but the reality is outside of Mac OS X, their products are anything but productive. I'm more concerned about what I can actually do, than how cool it is to pinch my screen to zoom out.

I think the success of both the Android OS and Amazon Kindle has proved that Steve Jobs is concerned about competition.
