If you’ve been looking to make the switch to Yahoo! Mail then I’ve got the tool you need. Yahoo! has a partnership with a company called TrueSwitch which is used to transfer emails, calendar info, and contacts from one account to another. So for no additional costs you can switch to Yahoo! Mail from any of these providers: Hotmail, AOL, Gmail, Comcast, Yahoo!, Cox, Earthlink, MSN, Netscape, Netzero, Juno, CS, Optonline, and Worldnet.

The process looks like it is extremely painless, and it’s kinda funny that I just found this. My brother recently switched from Gmail to Yahoo! Mail because of the better support for his Blackberry, but he had troubles getting all of his stuff moved over. I’m sure knowing about this tool would have made it a lot easier! Here’s a video on how it works:

Also, it appears that Yahoo! Mail has upped their attachment size limitation to 20MB, thereby matching what Google offers. They’re even adding 24-hour mail support via IM, as well as a few other things. Yahoo! might be on a roll here.

Thanks for the tip netster007x!

They really need to advertise this. Right now, the only way to get to it from Yahoo! Mail is to click options>import contacts. I guess this isn’t linked to properly since it’s so new.

  2. Meh, I had to get out of Yahoo as the spam blocker sucks. I get about half my spam in the bulk folder and the other half in my inbox…and the amount of false positives that pop up in the bulk folder is amazing.

All in all, the ONLY thing Yahoo has over Gmail is unlimited storage and it’s +1 on not dumping all your info with Google.
Gmail kicks Ymail’s ass in everything else, though.

  3. I have been using Gmail since October 2004, I am using 5% of my storage. For me Gmail is pretty much unlimited storage. I also use hotmail, I currently just use my hotmail account for websites and friends who won’t update their address books so I still have to check both. I have 5% storage used in hotmail since december 2004.

I have been on the net much longer than that I wonder what happened to all the emails before ‘04? I am guessing I saved them to either a floppy or cd, but have had no reason to hunt them down. Possible forum topic? How long do you keep email?

Why would I want to switch from Gmail? Gmail has been, and continues to be great for me.

    • I am changing from Gmail to Yahoo for the simple reason that GMail is absolutely cumbersome. You can’t do something as simple as sort your e-mails by sender. It’s ridiculous.

Yes, I am the one who switched and I happened to stumble upon this feature and use it about a month ago. My only complaint is in the process of using this feature it logs into your gmail account who knows how many times which caused it to lock my account with gmail due to suspicious activities. I was locked out for over 26 hours in 2 days with no access to new emails what so ever. So while this is a great feature I do stress caution in using it.

In your popular articles bar at the top, I just saw “how to backup Gmail.” With this feature, it would be very easy to back it up, maintaining folder structure, contacts, and calendar events, to Yahoo! Also, Y! has unlimited storage so you never have to worry about running out of room in your backup.

Y!’s spam blocker has worked pretty well for me. In my new address, I get maybe 5-10 spams and all go to spam folder. Sometimes I get false positives for automated sign-ups, but they’re EZ to notice.

  7. $20 to switch to Yahoo! or switch to Gmail for free. I’ll choose the latter. Looks like a good service, but they should make money off Yahoo ads, and not $19.95 per transfer.

Never had a problem with the Yahoo spam blocker here. It works 99% great for moi. :?

  9. With no POP/SMTP functionality and loads of banner ads, there’s just no way I’m going to switch to Yahoo! Mail. Even if Google’s evil and they’re not.

Edit: wow, that Yahoo! blog contains no tracking URLs for a change! :o

No, it’s entirely free! With this deal you can w/ a few clicks create a Y! Email address and import all of your Emails/contacts/calendar, plus it has 20MB free attachment limit, unlimited storage. All this is free. There’s never been a better time to give Yahoo! a shot! I didn’t even mention the zippy drag+drop, keyboard shortcut filled, tabbed mail UI. And then there’s the built in IM…

    trueswitch.com/yahoo

  11. People switch from GMail to Yahoo! Mail intentionally?

    • YES. I changed to gmail and I want to suicide. You can’t sort your messages by sender. The sort functionality is fundamental. Yahoo might seem less fancy but is waaay more practical.

Sorry about that. I went to trueswitch.com and saw it said “Only $19.95.” I didn’t know about the trueswitch.com/yahoo site.

  13. For those of your with Mozilla Thunderbird installed, you can use all of the webmail providers with Thunderbird with the Webmail plugin from [webmail.mozdev.org]

Install the webmail extension into Thunderbird as well as your service – Y!, MSN, Gmail, AOL etc…..

  14. Switch from Gmail to yahoo!. You must be kidding.

I’m really surprised that they don’t promote this more as well, but I’m guessing that they probably have to pay TrueSwitch on a per-user basis. The more people that switch, the more it costs them. They probably don’t mind forking over the costs for people who are really enthusiastic about switching, but they would probably want to save the moneyh for the casual user that is just playing around with alternatives.

I love it as well, but many people in my family use Yahoo! because they just like it. I don’t know why, but they just don’t want to switch to Gmail. I think it is because Yahoo! has been around for a lot longer.

Oh yeah! I forgot that problem you had using it. I was thinking the lockout was due to something else.

Hey Ryan, I may have been giving you some bad intel regarding Yahoo! Mail attachment size limits. Yahoo! recently put up a site explaining that the free 20MB attachment limit (up from 10) is part of a promotion for “power users.” I qualify as one, but not necessarily everyone will. Also, it says it’s a pilot program that may be discontinued at any time.

Don’t get me wrong, I think this is a really cool program giving out free bonuses. I just want to get out the facts.

That’s actually really cool. I didn’t know they had such a program. Thanks for the info.

  19. actually i was in pain forwarding all the mails, i was waiting for this type of service. thanks for posting it.

  20. I have both a Gmail and a Yahoo account, but I like the Yahoo account better. I hardly use the Gmail one; I can’t sort things the way I like too, although the labels are nice.
