Huge news broke this morning when information got leaked to the press regarding an acquisition of The Pirate Bay. It's said that they got $7.8 million for the site which will be turned over to the buyers, Global Gaming Factory X, in August.
Nokia has ponied up and bought a large chunk of Symbian that they didn't already own, which equates to another 52%. For those of you unfamiliar with Symbian it is the software platform that powers the Nokia devices, and one analyst estimates that Nokia paid close to $250 million a year in licensing fees for it.
Did ya miss us? We've been out of town since last Thursday, and since then there were some pretty big announcements that we wanted to be sure to cover. It appears as though the last few days before last weekend was the prime time for acquisitions. ;)
Microsoft and Yahoo are at it again with this whole acquisition thing, and this time we find it a bit humorous. It started out on Saturday when Microsoft posted a press release with a letter that Steve Ballmer sent to Yahoo. Yahoo responded of course, and they too posted their letter in a press release.
It's been almost a year since Google announced that they wanted to acquire DoubleClick for $3.1 billion. That happened about mid-April last year, and the deal finally and officially closed on March 11th of this year.
TechCrunch is reporting that "Something big is brewing between Google and eBay's Skype." Whatever is brewing, whether it's a full-blown acquisition or a partnership, this could be pretty big.
We'd be surprised if you haven't heard by now that Microsoft has made an offer to Yahoo to acquire them for about $44.6 billion in cash! Instead of talking in length about each of them, we thought we'd sum everything up into an easy-to-read bulleted list.
MySQL was acquired by Sun Microsystems today (also here and here) for a whopping $1 billion. I can't say it was something I was expecting after MySQL has remained independent for over 10 years, but in the end I think it will be good for both the companies involved and the users.
The new year has just begun and if 2008 is anything like 2007, we should expect a bunch of acquisitions in the tech world. As I heard someone say recently, acquisitions should be considered the lottery for geeks, except the odds of "winning" are much higher than the actual lottery.
