While We Were Gone…

Did ya miss us? We've been out of town since last Thursday, and since then there were some pretty big announcements that we wanted to be sure to cover. It appears as though the last few days before last weekend was the prime time for acquisitions. ;)

Microsoft and Yahoo are Battling it Out

Microsoft and Yahoo are at it again with this whole acquisition thing, and this time we find it a bit humorous. It started out on Saturday when Microsoft posted a press release with a letter that Steve Ballmer sent to Yahoo.  Yahoo responded of course, and they too posted their letter in a press release.

Microsoft Offers Yahoo $44.6 Billion! What Does This Mean?

We'd be surprised if you haven't heard by now that Microsoft has made an offer to Yahoo to acquire them for about $44.6 billion in cash! It's all over the news (for good reason), and there are all kinds of ideas regarding this acquisition floating around the Internet.  Instead of talking in length about each of them, we thought we'd sum everything up into an easy-to-read bulleted list.

MySQL … The $1 Billion Acquisition

MySQL was acquired by Sun Microsystems today (also here and here) for a whopping $1 billion. I can't say it was something I was expecting after MySQL has remained independent for over 10 years, but in the end I think it will be good for both the companies involved and the users.

MyFive: Important Tech Acquisitions of 2007

The new year has just begun and if 2008 is anything like 2007, we should expect a bunch of acquisitions in the tech world.  As I heard someone say recently, acquisitions should be considered the lottery for geeks, except the odds of "winning" are much higher than the actual lottery.

CyberNet’s Year in Review: May-June

May of 2007 was about Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and Facebook. Apple's Steve Jobs and Microsoft's Bill Gates made a rare appearance stage as part of the D Conference. Their chat with Walt Mosberg and Kara Swisher was interesting to say the least, and the conversation included the mentioning of those Mac vs. PC commercials where Jobs said that the point of them was for Mac and PC's to like each other.

Happy 9th Birthday Google!

If you visit Google today, you'll notice the usual logo has been replaced with the one you see pictured to the right.  It's Google's 9th Birthday, and they're celebrating! While there are actually several dates that could be considered Google's birthday, clearly they acknowledge today, September 27th as their official birthday, the day that they became incorporated and their name was officially Google inc.

Yahoo to Acquire Zimbra for 350 Million

All along I had been wondering why Yahoo hadn't acquired Zoho (Online Office Suite) yet. In fact, back in July I asked this very question and I suggested that Yahoo seemed like a likely buyer because Microsoft has no need for them, and Google has their own Office Suite. Now I know that Yahoo had no need for Zoho - they were going after Zimbra, an Online Open Source Office Suite.

Google Quickly Becoming the Next Microsoft

Remember back in April when Google announced that they were acquiring DoubleClick, and Microsoft said “not so fast” and protested the move saying it would hurt competition? Then what did Microsoft do? They acquired online advertising firm aQuantitive, and more recently, they announced they were acquiring an advertising exchange firm called AdECN as well.
