How to Run Linux Apps Natively On Windows

I consider myself a Windows guy, but there are things I prefer doing on Linux mainly because of its advanced terminal. My unwillingness to pick a side has some inconvenient implications: rebooting into Linux every time takes too much time and virtualized Linux tends to be a little slow on most machines.

Create Daily/Session Computer Usage TIme Limits

The demand for parental controls on computers is rapidly growing as kids continue to get their own personal machines. That's why Microsoft started to include some of that functionality in Vista and Windows 7, but it is generally pretty basic when it comes down to limiting the amount of time a user can spend on the machine.

PicPick – Free Portable Screenshot App

Coming across a good free screenshot application is a rarity these days. I used to be a big fan of FastStone Capture, but once they went from free to paid it felt like my money would be better spent on SnagIt (in the event I decided to purchase an app).

Growl Becoming a Must-have App on Windows?

Having bought my first Mac about a year and a half ago one app that I quickly started to love was Growl. It brought a universal notification system to the operating system that any application could make use of, and the cross-program uniformity made the OS experience that much better.

Regular Expression Generator and Tester

I always find myself using regular expressions (a.k.a. regex) in my programming because they are often the best way to parse out bits and pieces from blocks of text. Ever since I discovered the online RegExr that has been my tool of choice, but sometimes it's nice to have a dedicated application. Programs like RegexBuddy are awesome, but aren't free.

Get the Windows 7 Taskbar for XP

One of my favorite features in Windows 7 has to be the redesigned Taskbar. The entire user experience is so smooth, and I think they really went down the right path with it. At work I'm stuck on XP, and I went looking for a way that I could get a lot of the same functionality as what Windows 7 offers.

Keyboard Shortcut to Paste Plain Text

There are some things I never understood with Microsoft. For example, why was it never possible until Windows 7 to have a keyboard shortcut for creating a new folder? Or for that matter why was there not even a toolbar icon you could add to perform that action? At least in Windows 7 they finally assigned Ctrl+Shift+N for creating a new folder, but that's not the only thing that's perplexed me.

Customizing Miranda

A little while ago one of my co-workers convinced me to give the Miranda instant messenger a try, and at first I was reluctant because I had heard how much customization was typically needed to get it just the way you wanted it. Over the years I had downloaded it to play around, but it has a rather overwhelming number of options that you can mess with.

Aero Glass in Windows XP… Done Right

UPDATE: As some commenters have pointed out certain antivirus applications are flagging this application as containing a trojan. My antivirus, NOD32, did not find any virus though. So it's up to you whether you want to proceed.

Backup Only Changed Portions of Files with DeltaCopy

I'll forewarn you that DeltaCopy is something you won't want to use for all of your backup needs because it's not the easiest thing in the world to set up. It is, however, useful if you're backing up large amounts of data every night that doesn't change very much.

YAPM: Process Manager with a Ribbon UI

Most computer power users probably open up the Windows task/process manager at least a few times each day. Maybe it's to close down an app that isn't responding, to see what's eating your system resources, or maybe even a bit more advanced like making sure you're aware of everything that's running on your PC.

Deleting Locked Files (32 and 64-bit)

It seems like on Windows I always come across those pesky files I can't delete because another process is using it. Up until a few months ago I had always used a program called Unlocker to get around this, and it has served me well. I had to stop using it, however, when I moved to Vista 64-bit since it only includes support for 32-bit versions of Windows.

Firefox 3.7 and Firefox 4.0 Interface Mockups

Mozilla just wrapped up the Firefox 3.5 release a few weeks ago, but they are already going to town on what they can do for future improvements. When they redesigned Firefox 3.0 I thought the new designs were okay, but they weren't anything that seemed to be revolutionary.
