Vista Computers Save about $75 per Year in Energy

When Microsoft created Vista they realized that they had to do a better job with conserving batteries and energy. Laptops are getting to the point where they last as little as an hour when they are brand new, and that not only reduces productivity but it also means they consume more electricity.

CyberNotes:How Much Energy does Your TV Consume?

Blog Action Day is here! That's right, today is Blog Action Day, the day that bloggers are encouraged to get one issue out there in the minds of all their readers.  This years topic is the environment, and the goal is for every blog to post one article about the environment today.  Given how important our environment is, we decided that we'd spend the entire day writing about it, particularly how the technology that we use affects the environment.  Today's Microsoft Monday feature was put on the sidelines while we focus all of our attention on different things that all of us can do to help the environment and make this awesome planet a better place to live.

Avast! Antivirus for Windows Home Server (WHS)

As many of you probably know the free Avast! Home is my antivirus of choice, and there is a new Beta available for people running the recently released Windows Home Server (WHS). Anyone can download and install the Beta, and one of the big advantages that you'll receive by using it is the central management screen that's integrated into the WHS Console pictured above.

A press release was sent out yesterday regarding the new Linspire 6.0 Linux operating system that was just released. For those of you who haven't heard of Linspire before it's probably because you have to shell out $50 to buy it. The reason you have to pay for it is that it includes proprietary software, drivers, and codecs which make the operating system ready to use out-of-the-box.

Betavoltaic Batteries Last 30-Years in Your Laptop

Could you imagine owning a laptop or a cellphone that had a battery life of 30-years (without recharging)? Such a technology could render chargers extinct because it is much more likely that the battery will outlast the product itself. The betavoltaic batteries promise to do just that, and no they are not outrageously enormous.

JAlbum Launches Image Hosting Solutions

JAlbum is a free cross-platform program that I've been using for years, and before I got my Flickr account it was my only way to share digital photos with my family. I had a computer at my house being used to serve up the photos to anyone that requested them, but Flickr was too great of a deal to pass up.

ZoneAlarm ForceField Offers Virtual Surfing

ZoneAlarm is a very well respected security company, and for the longest time it was my primary choice for firewall protection. They've remained pretty strong in that area, but lately I've seen people converting to other security apps, such as the free Comodo firewall.

Is Apple Better Than Microsoft?

There are a lot of Apple fans out there these days, and I have nothing against them. I don't use any Apple products aside from the iPod, but I do think it is good that they are emerging successful in the computer market so that there is more competition. And good competition often means that the consumers win.
