Why the CyberSearch Extension has been Discontinued

I've been getting at least a dozen emails a day asking when the CyberSearch extension would be getting updated for Firefox 4, but I have some bad news for everyone. Our extension was made possible thanks to Google's Web Search API, but they deprecated it back in November 2010 in favor of a new JSON Custom Search API. From a developer's point of view this kind of thing happens all the time...

Bing Has Been Removed from CyberSearch

In the last major update to our CyberSearch Firefox extension we decided to add in some basic support for Bing searching. It had been requested by quite a few users, and even though I personally prefer Google over Bing I wanted to make sure that our users had a choice. As it turns out the way our extension works doesn't abide by their terms of service.

CyberSearch 2.0.5 – Easier “Search This Site”

We released the CyberSearch 2.0.5 Firefox extension this week which includes numerous bug fixes and support for Firefox 3.7 nightly builds, and the Snapback functionality is once again working the way I intended it to.

CyberSearch 2.0.2 Released

For those of you using CyberSearch I thought I'd let you know that I just released version 2.0.2 that resolves almost all of the issues users were reporting with Firefox 3.6 Beta 1. The main reason I wanted to let everyone know is that Mozilla hasn't approved CyberSearch 2.0 yet, which means you won't receive an update notification in the browser.

CyberSearch 2.0: Bing Support, Search Details, and More

I've been working on a new version of CyberSearch for a little while now, and I've been trying to come up with ways to add all of the most requested features.

CyberSearch Tops 25,000 Downloads

It's definitely hard to believe, but after 6-months of being released the CyberSearch extension has been downloaded over 25,000 times from Mozilla's add-ons site. The stats page for our add-on appears to be a bit screwed up since it's only reporting that we have 3 active users, but the average number of you actively using CyberSearch is around 4,000... which is probably a bit more accurate.

CyberSearch Supports Firefox 3.1 Beta

Mozilla released Firefox 3.1 Beta 1 the other day, and users playing with version 3.1 for the first time will be able to enjoy some of the enhancements it brings to the table. Things like advanced address bar filtering, better tab switching, and drastically improved JavaScript performance are the main highlights for this release.

CyberSearch Publicly Available on Mozilla Add-ons

It's taken a few months, but I'm happy to announce that anyone can install our homegrown CyberSearch extension for Firefox without needing a Mozilla account. Just yesterday our extension got pushed out of the sandbox, and a big thanks goes out to all of the CyberSearch users who took the time to leave a review.

CyberNotes: Google Maps Firefox Extensions

Google Maps is hands down my favorite online mapping service because it has a simplistic design, which in the end makes it load extremely fast. Not only that but they offer features not found on other mapping services, including Street View, Wikipedia integration, and even walking directions.

CyberSearch 1.0.2: Pull Up Google Results Page Faster

Another day, another CyberSearch release. ;) Over the weekend I had some time to work on a new CyberSearch feature that I've periodically received requests for. Like most features I had to think this one through to ensure that it wouldn't interfere with the built-in Firefox keyword system.

CyberSearch 1.0.1: Background Colors are Back

Okay, so I wasn't thinking that I'd have a new version of CyberSearch so soon, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this will stop the flood of emails requesting that I revive the customizable background color feature. Yesterday we released CyberSearch 1.0, and with it came a bunch of new features. Along with that I also scrapped the option to customize the background color of the results.

CyberNotes Special: Introducing CyberSearch 1.0

It's been exactly one month since I uploaded the first version of CyberSearch to Mozilla's site, and since then we've had 4,000 downloads of the extension. What's really kept us going are all of you who have expressed how valuable the extension has become, and we're now averaging 4.60/5.00 stars from the 34 reviews we've received thus far.

Helpful Tip: Getting More out of CyberSearch Keywords

We know that you've had less than two weeks to kick around our CyberSearch extension, and we hope by this point you're finding it to be an indispensable tool. The true power lies in the keyword system that it comes with, but it might take a little time to really understand how it works. Our video demonstration should be enough to get your creative juices flowing though.

CyberSearch 0.9.6 Update

Last week we released the CyberSearch Firefox extension, and I can't believe all of the great feedback we've received. Dozens of different sites have written about the extension already, and we've received over 2,100 downloads. If you like to follow stats as much as I do then you can head on over to CyberSearch's statistics page that I've made publicly viewable.

Invalid File Hash When Installing a Firefox Extension

Ever since we launched the CyberSearch extension I've been getting a ton of emails with recommendations on what I can do to make it better, and alongside those emails are also a few dozen from people who are having troubles trying to install it. What happens to them, and I've had this happen to me before, is they are prompted with this warning when trying to install the extension:

CyberNotes: CyberSearch Firefox Extension

Yesterday we announced the new Firefox extension that we launched called CyberSearch (our homepage for CyberSearch). It is based on the original version of AwesomeSearch (now called Searchery), and the reason I decided to create the extension was because I saw how it could make me more productive. Hopefully what I've come up with can be useful for you as well.

CyberSearch Firefox Extension Pre-Launch

We wanted to give our readers a heads up that we are officially launching the CyberSearch Firefox extension tomorrow morning, but you can get your hands on it right now! It is based on the original version of AwesomeSearch, which is now called Searchery. We had contacted the developer of that extension with some of the ideas that we had, but unfortunately we never heard back from him.
