Use Yahoo! Mail or Gmail for MailTo Links in Firefox 3

Earlier this week we showed you how you could take advantage of Firefox 3's built-in support for web applications. To be more specific we demonstrated how you can preview iCal calendars using 30boxes.com, and thanks to Lifehacker it looks like you can do the same thing for MailTo links.

CyberNotes: Track a Stolen Computer

Windows only Today we've got an amazing freeware application for Windows that actually serves two different purposes. Give a hardy welcome to LocatePC. First and foremost it will keep you informed of your computer's whereabouts by sending you an email either on a daily basis or anytime the IP address of the machine changes.

Thunderbird 3 Alpha 1 Released (a.k.a. Shredder)

I can't say that I was expecting this today, but I'm happy to report that Mozilla Thunderbird 3.0 Alpha 1 (codenamed Shredder) has been released. This version does of course have tabs, and as seen in the screenshot above you can open new messages in tabs for easy navigation. That's definitely a feature I've been waiting for, but now I wish you could actually compose a message in a new tab as well.

Helpful Tip: Automatically Delete or Mark Spam as Read in Gmail

I've slowly made the move back to using an email client full-time ever since Gmail started offering IMAP support. By using IMAP both my online Gmail account and all of my email client are kept in sync with each other, which is nice since I read my mail on multiple devices throughout the day.

CyberNotes: HTML Signatures in Apple Mail

Now that I'm up and running on my Mac I decided to give the Apple Mail program a shot. It's the built-in email solution that is bundled with Mac OS X, and also lets you do things like leave notes to yourself or manage a todo list. One thing that I quickly noticed was that it doesn't directly include support for HTML signatures.

CyberNotes: Easy Online Contact Management

These days, many of us have multiple places where we store contact information. For myself, I have a list of contacts in my personal email account, my work email account, contacts within some of the social networks I belong to, and then a master list on my computer. With all of the different places where we have lists of contacts, it can get a bit confusing and hard to manage.

Google Email Uploader Launches for Google Apps

Google Apps users who have years (or just a few months worth) of emails stored in Outlook, Outlook Express or Thunderbird, now have a very simple way to upload those messages to a Google Apps mailbox (Gmail). Google just launched an open source desktop utility called Google Email Uploader that gets the job done.

Money Lost from Internet Crimes Rises

When you look at the  list of uses, advantages and opportunities that the Internet provides, it's seemingly never-ending, yet there are some "dark" sides to it as well. One of those dark sides is that the Internet provides criminals with lots of opportunities to scam good people.

Digsby: A Nice Cross-Network Messenger

I've been meaning to give Digsby a spin ever since the public Beta was released about two weeks ago. It looked like it was a well designed cross-network (and cross-platform) instant messenger, and it offered quite a few features that no other instant messengers have touched on before. And after having used it for only about 30 minutes I think I may have found myself a new messenger.

CyberNotes: Using Gmail Filters

One of the reasons that I love Gmail the most is the remarkably powerful filter system that is integrated into it. With the filtering system you can analyze emails as they hit your Inbox, and then perform certain actions on them. If you spend the time to setup quality filters it can almost be like having your own personal secretary to sift through emails, but it's a lot cheaper. ;)

Scan a File for Viruses

Click to EnlargeHave you ever downloaded a file and sat there pondering whether it was actually clean? You promptly scan it with your antivirus application, but then you're left wondering whether it could be a virus that has yet to be discovered. If you use VirusTotal, a free online service, you might be able to rest a little easier.

Add Non-Gmail Email Address to your Google Account

Just recently, Google added a new feature so that you can associate non-Gmail addresses to your Google account. What I mean by this is that you can inform Google that you have other email accounts - maybe a Windows Live or Yahoo account.

Hack Alert – Check Your Gmail Filters!

One of the features that I use quite often in Gmail is the filter list. With filters I'm able to forward, apply labels, and delete/archive emails as they come in. Unfortunately this was also a source for hackers to wreak havoc on you.

CyberNotes: Backup Emails (Outlook, Thunderbird, Gmail)

For one reason or another many email applications don't provide an easy way to backup all of your data. To me it seems like a no brainer to offer such a feature especially for online email services where you have a minimal amount of control over how you can export your data.

CyberNotes: Gmail 2 Greasemonkey Scripts

Gmail 2 has introduced some exciting new features to users including AIM messenger support, color coded labels, and several backend improvements. All of these changes have helped remove the need for some Greasemonkey scripts, but such drastic alterations have caused a lot of broken scripts.

Spam Eats 512 Terabytes each…

Day! Hard to believe, isn't it? Spam eats 512 terabytes of space each and every single day. This is just an extremely rough estimate, and it's likely that it's in fact more than 512 terabytes each day.  Pingdom came up with this estimate after finding out that there are about 120 billion spam emails that pollute the web each day.

New: Gmail Color Coded Labels

When Google started distributing the new Gmail 2 I figured they would still have some aces up their sleeves. Well, they just revealed one of those aces: color coded labels for your emails! I know a lot of people have been wanting them to add this feature for awhile, and it is finally here.

Get a Live.com Email Address Tomorrow, Maybe

I'm not sure if you should be getting your hopes up quite yet, but rumors have started to circulate around the Internet that Microsoft will be opening up the @live.com email addresses tomorrow for public registration. There is no official word from Microsoft that this will be happening, but the timing sounds about right.

Multiple IM Support Coming to Google?

One of the things people like to do with Google's products is search through their source code looking for any possible hints of features to come. As nerds users it is our duty to do that, and the new Gmail 2.0 is no exception.
