JottiQ Antivirus Scanner is the Shining Point of NANY 2011

Every year Donation Coder holds an event called "New Apps for the New Year" (NANY) where developers do some cramming in order to whip up small but useful apps.

SlimPDF: A Free Lightweight PDF Reader

I have never looked very kindly on Adobe Reader simply because of how bloated it has become over the years. For awhile the startup times were getting longer and longer until they finally realized that users were getting frustrated, and then they started to shift some focus to performance.

Microsoft Releases Process Explorer 12

I've always considered Microsoft's Process Explorer app to be the Windows Task Manager alternative for power users. Some part of me has always wished that Microsoft would ship this with Windows, and let people switch to using this more comprehensive solution without needing to download anything.

FreeFileSync – Compare and Sync Folders

One thing I've never taken lightly is making sure all of my most important data is backed up. Utilities like SyncBack have served me well over the years, and I've even gone as far as to buy a copy of the software for my primary PC. For my other computers I switch on and off between other tools, and one of the more recent ones is FreeFileSync.

Live Bookmarks in Your Firefox Sidebar

Live Bookmarks are a feature that have been included in Firefox for ages, and have provided a simple way for you to subscribe to RSS feeds. They essentially act like dynamic bookmarks that are able to update as websites offer new content, and the Feed Sidebar extension makes it even navigate through the news they bring to you.

Screenpresso: A Free and Fancy Screenshot Utility

It seems like there are a lot of free screenshot tools popping up lately, which is not something you'll see me complaining about. SnagIt has held the crown when it comes to professional screen capturing with its advanced editor and wide array of options, but these alternatives are slowly creeping up on the rather mature application.

Freeware to Monitor Bandwidth Usage

There are some situations where it's nice to monitor the amount of bandwidth that's being used by your computer. One reason would be if your Internet Service Provider (ISP) caps the amount of data that you're allowed to plow through in a given month.

SnagIt for Mac (Beta) Released

I've been using a Mac for nearly two years, and with as many screenshots as I take there was just never an app that quite matched the capabilities of SnagIt on Windows. I'll admit that Skitch was pretty close, but the screenshot editor lacked in a lot of different areas. My biggest pet peeve is the inability to manage/manipulate multiple screenshots on the same canvas... a.k.a.

PicPick – Free Portable Screenshot App

Coming across a good free screenshot application is a rarity these days. I used to be a big fan of FastStone Capture, but once they went from free to paid it felt like my money would be better spent on SnagIt (in the event I decided to purchase an app).

Remote Desktop 7 Download for XP & Vista

One of the new features in Windows 7 is Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) 7, and Microsoft decided to also offer the most of the same functionality to Windows XP and Vista users. Many of you will probably shrug this off as a pointless update, but it has something that is really useful to me. What is it?

How to Make Facebook Worth Your Time Again

If Simon was a color, he'd be green. When Amanda reincarnates, she'll be a dog. If Max was a Friends character, he'd be Ross. If this sounds familiar, chances are that your Facebook home page is filled with random quiz results from your friends. While these apps may entertain some people, for most of us it is one of the major reasons to leave the quiz-flooded Facebook.

winLAME: Another Free Audio Converter

A few weeks ago we wrote about a free audio converter that was pretty nice, but when installing the app it tries to also put a bunch of third-party software on your machine. I made sure to point this out, but our readers stepped up and mentioned several other apps that are both free and clean. One of them, called winLAME, was recommended by Ian and really caught my attention.

WOT Keeps You Safe On the Internet, Tops Bloated SiteAdvisor

SiteAdvisor started out as a really good idea. Whenever you went to a site, the SiteAdvisor label would turn green (safe), yellow (shady) or red (dangerous) to indicate the safety of that site.

Get the Windows 7 Taskbar for XP

One of my favorite features in Windows 7 has to be the redesigned Taskbar. The entire user experience is so smooth, and I think they really went down the right path with it. At work I'm stuck on XP, and I went looking for a way that I could get a lot of the same functionality as what Windows 7 offers.

DiskCryptor: Entire Hard Drive Encryption

I think that in the future we will be encrypting a lot of our data because, well, most of it probably won't be located on our own machines. When all our files are in the cloud encryption will be important to ensure the security of our data, but up to now most people have never worried about encrypting anything.
