There might be a time that comes where you want to edit some file or folder attributes that Windows doesn't natively let you change. Things like the date a file was created, modified, and accessed are normally out of your control, but with the free Attribute Changer you can change many of those properties in just a few clicks.

File sync services like Google Drive and Dropbox will only sync the files and folders that are placed within their app-specific directories.
Sometimes a folder can get overwhelmingly unorganized, and trying to sort it out manually would take forever. That's where a program like Folder Axe is handy. You can throw a huge directory of files and folders at it, and then choose how it should sort the files. It will then organize them into directories or ZIP them up for easy archival based on the parameters you specify.
We've covered several Windows Explorer alternatives here on the site, and in general the ones that are free all leave something to be desired. The thing that I really like with NexusFile is that it has many of the features power users want, but without all the clutter that a lot of the other file managers tend to come with.
I'm sure we all have hundreds if not thousands of duplicate files on our computers because of apps that make unnecessary copies of files. I'm sure we've all seen the multitude of duplicate file finders out there that help eliminate these duplicates, and I'd say Duplicate Commander deserves to be near the top of that list.
Do you have a bunch of files sitting around unorganized in a folder, or just have your desktop cluttered with junk that you haven't sorted through in months? Maybe the free (and portable) DropIt app can help. It creates a drop zone where you can drag and drop files or folders, and it will take action on them based on the patterns you specify.
I constantly find myself trying out different text editors because sometimes I feel like I need the power something like Notepad++ has to offer, but other times I feel like it is so much more than what I need. If you're a programmer that feels the same way then I've got a great find for you.
I've tried all kinds of hard drive space analyzers because I hate having excessively large files laying around for no good reason. We've already written several articles on some of the programs out there that will help you crack down on large files and folders (including this long list of apps), but we've got another one to show off.
Earlier this week the first Beta release of Defraggler 2.0 was posted, which is a pretty big milestone for the software. This defragmentation utility is freely available, and this update serves as the first major milestone in nearly three years (Defraggler 1.0 Beta debuted back in November 2007).
We've covered all kinds of backup utilities on the site, but the one covered in this article is hands-down one of my favorites. Synchronicity is free, open source, and available in a portable format. After you fire it up the first time you'll probably be shocked that something laid out this nicely only uses 215KB on your hard drive... I know I was.
One of the things that still surprises me is the fact that modern operating systems still don't make it easy for the average user to password protect a folder. I'm not even talking about encrypting a folder - just a simple password to keep prying eyes out. I know a lot of families who share a computer and even share a single user account, and therefore they all have access to the same files.
We have covered all kinds of bulk file renaming tools here, but the free RegexRenamer is one of my new favorites. As you can see in the screenshot above it has a very clean interface, but that is largely because it relies on you understanding how regular expressions (a.k.a. regex) work.

Sometimes it can be a pain to constantly rename new files and/or photos as you move them onto your computer. We've covered quite a few batch file renamers in the past, but one area that makes Personal Renamer unique is in its automatic processing capabilities.
Similarity is a pretty awesome app for anyone who doesn't keep their music library organized. I don't have a very large music library (just a few hundred songs), but I know people who have tens of thousands of songs. Once it starts getting that big I could see some duplicate songs sneaking in there...
Freeing up some space on your hard drive may not be a concern right now, but down the road you may find that the space left on your drive is a little lower than you'd like. When that happens you'll turn to a disk space tool such as FilePro.

One thing I've never taken lightly is making sure all of my most important data is backed up. Utilities like SyncBack have served me well over the years, and I've even gone as far as to buy a copy of the software for my primary PC. For my other computers I switch on and off between other tools, and one of the more recent ones is FreeFileSync.
I always find myself amazed anytime I see someone that is still using WinZip. There are so many free utilities out there to choose from, and yet they still choose the one app that either requires you to pay or you have to wait minutes for a nag screen to disappear.
I'm always on the look out for awesome text and code editors, but the percentage that turn out to be good versus the number I actually test is fairly low. RJ TextEd ranks pretty high in that list though. It's free, portable, and has a very extensive list of features.
